Fourteen years of it, and the New York Jets are three or four losses away from officially adding one more season to the list. With seven losses so far, the Jets need a saving grace in Week 8 to give the fans a glimmer of happiness.
The past two weeks have been really terrible for the Jets and their signal-caller, Justin Fields. The former Steeler has thrown less than 50 yards in both Week 6 and Week 7 games. In the Week 6 outing against the Denver Broncos, Fields managed just 45 yards from nine completions and registered a QBR of 8.1.
The successive week wasn’t any better, as he finished with just one more yard than the previous game, while recording six completions off 12 attempts. In six games, he has only managed four touchdowns.
The Jets, with a 0-7 record, face the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The Bengals, despite missing their star player, Joe Burrow, have a 3-4 record and sit right below the Kansas City Chiefs at ninth place in the conference. The Jets can’t afford a loss, and it’s not surprising that the fans have demanded an overall rebuild, starting with a new quarterback on Sunday against the resilient orange cats.
With Fields registering less than 100 yards as cumulative passing yards in the past two games, the management has to decide on who’ll be at the center in Week 8. Though they claim to have made one, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn isn’t ready to reveal who the mystery man is. Feels like an episode of Love is Blind when we will finally know the person when they walk out of the tunnel.
The new coach wants to retain the competitive edge the mystery gives them. It would have worked if Fields’ replacement, Tyrod Taylor, had promising numbers. Taylor, who’s the favorite according to certain sources, has played in three games and recorded 379 yards with 5.5 yards per attempt and three touchdowns, as well as three interceptions.
Despite Taylor being a favorite, he is listed in the injury report with a knee ailment and had limited practice time. It was when the reporter asked Glenn whether Taylor’s injury was playing a role in his decision, the coach erupted with his remark. Glenn said in a media availability on Friday:
That’s exactly why I’m not telling you, because I don’t want to. That’s exactly why I’m saying it, because I don’t want to. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to answer you that. It’s not going to change.

Jets owner Woody Johnson ripped into Fields and blamed him for their weak start, and choosing Taylor might look like Glenn is dancing to Johnson’s song. This is despite the fact that Glenn claims he has full freedom from Johnson, who’s the worst-ranked owner in the league, to decide the roster as he wishes.
The Jets are set to play the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8 without Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson
The New York Jets will be without two of their most important players when they face the Cincinnati Bengals, cornerback Sauce Gardner and wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Gardner remains in concussion protocol after suffering a head injury during last week’s loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Meanwhile, Wilson continues to recover from a knee injury he sustained two weeks ago against the Denver Broncos in London. Wilson’s absence marks the first time he’s missed consecutive games since being drafted in 2022.
Losing both players significantly weakens the Jets on both sides of the ball and could make it even harder for them to avoid falling to 0-8. Gardner is the anchor of their secondary and one of the league’s top lockdown defenders; without him, the Bengals’ dynamic duo of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins will likely face less resistance. Even without Joe Burrow, Chase has produced high numbers, like breaking his own franchise record of most receptions in a single game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week.
On offense, Wilson’s injury leaves the Jets without their most reliable playmaker in a unit that has already struggled to score in recent weeks. The team will now rely on unproven replacements, including rookie Azareye’h Thomas, who is set to start opposite Brandon Stephens in Gardner’s place, making the Jets’ task against a injury-hit lackluster Bengals team a daunting one.
