One of the first moves Aaron Glenn made after taking over as the New York Jets head coach was signing Justin Fields as his starting quarterback. Perhaps it’s time to cut that experiment short because the Jets are winless after six games.
On Sunday, the Jets suffered a 13-11 defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos in London. Fields, like the previous five games, looked awful against Denver. He completed just 9 passes from 17 attempts for a meager 45 yards.
In the post-game press conference, reporters asked Aaron Glenn whether he would consider benching Justin Fields in favor of the more experienced Tyrod Taylor for the next game against the Carolina Panthers. Glenn did not appreciate the question.
Come on, man, what kind of question is that? There’s a number of guys that sometimes this league is like this [motioning his hand up and down], and there are guys that have bad games. That doesn’t mean you just bench them. Come on, you know better than that.

Fields had 45 PASS YDS, 31 RUSH YDS, & 0 TD vs. Denver…

Glenn’s reaction was uncalled for because the question made sense. Field’s performance has been below average. The Jets had just 82 total yards in offense despite possessing the ball for nearly 29 minutes.
Justin Fields failed to make plays against the Broncos
Sean Payton’s Broncos were 3.5-point favorites before kickoff. The AFC West franchise also had history on its side, as it won last year’s fixture 10-9 at MetLife Stadium.

Both teams exchanged field goals before Denver quarterback Bo Nix threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Nate Adkins in the first quarter.
The worst moment of the game at Tottenham Hotspur took place just before the halftime break. Jets burned 2:39 minutes from the clock, three time-outs (four total with Payton calling one for the Broncos), and the drive led to nothing because the time ran out.
Neither Glenn nor the Jets’ offensive coordinator, Tanner Engstrand, chanted any instructions through the earpiece inside Fields’ helmet. After the referee blew the halftime whistle, cameras caught wide receiver Garrett Wilson arguing with his head coach in the Jets’ dugout.

Wilson finished with three catches for 13 yards. He looked upset during the post-game presser as well.
I didn’t know exactly what the plan was.
Wilson told the media
Garrett Wilson was asked about his sideline exchange with Aaron Glenn at the end of the first half:

"I just didn't know exactly what the plan was. Once I figured it out, I was disappointed. I'll just say that."
Follow-up: "To not run a play, is that what you mean?"
Wilson: "I… pic.twitter.com/SkHpYtZQIt
Fields’ indecisiveness on the ball cost the Jets several opportunities to spread the play to his receivers.
Four minutes before the end of the third quarter, Nix conceded a safety, which allowed the Jets to take a two-point lead. The final nail in the coffin came from the Broncos’ Will Lutz, who scored a 27-yard field goal to secure the win.
Despite the bad stretch of games, Fields isn’t ready to give up on the season.
Got to keep going. I mean, there’s no other option. There’s what, 11 games left? Like I said, that’s the only option. There’s no, I don’t know, nothing else. Just keep going.

Glenn and the Jets’ next game is against the 3-3 Carolina Panthers, who defeated the Dallas Cowboys in the noon kickoff. In 8 previous meetings, the Panthers have won 5 games while the Jets have won 3. Fields will start the game.
The Jets aren’t benching Justin Fields. That’s fine. They don’t have to. They committed to him financially. Spent the offseason hoisting him up as their guy. They’ve [allegedly] constructed an entire offense around his strengths. So, if they’re not willing to give up on him yet, don’t.

Carolina is on a three-game winning streak against the Jets, and the last game finished with a 14-19 scoreline.
