Minnesota Vikings fans have been going through the emotions ever since experiencing some highs last season. JJ McCarthy and Aaron Jones, along with Justin Jefferson and the retooled defense, were supposed to lead the team into a new era.

Their opening game probably had Vikings fans going through it all after witnessing the horrifying first 3 quarters, only to then see their young QB create NFL history in the 4th to lead them to a win.

Those fans expected much of the same in Game 2, but McCarthy’s struggles left them wondering if their team selected the wrong quarterback in the 2024 Draft.

Soon after, news of his ankle sprain saw those fans sink into their seats as it became evident that Carson Wentz would take over for around 4 games until the young QB returns.

Some believed it was the franchise’s way of benching him after his disastrous performances. Still, there was some hope that head coach Kevin O’Connell would find a way to maximize Aaron Jones and Justin Jefferson. Now those hopes have been dashed.

The Vikings are placing starting RB Aaron Jones on Injured Reserve, knocking him out four games, per me and Tom Pelissero. He has a hamstring injury.

The NFL Network insider’s news came as a jolt for Minnesota Vikings fans. Not only will they not have their starting quarterback, but their lead running back will also miss 4 games.

This leaves their offense in a state of peril, as any chances of building momentum will now have to wait until after their October 19th clash against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Vikings fans upset as Aaron Jones heads to IR

The Minnesota Vikings will next face a Cincinnati Bengals squad facing its own crisis after starting quarterback Joe Burrow was ruled out for 3 months. Since the Bengals do not have a defense worth talking about, this game would have been the perfect opportunity to gain momentum with a possible win.

That momentum would have helped them against the inconsistent Pittsburgh Steelers and struggling Cleveland Browns. Now that JJ McCarthy and Aaron Jones are both out, those chances go up in a cloud of smoke.

Vikings fans are now bracing for the possibility of losing those games, along with the one against the defending Super Bowl champions. Upset, they took to social media to express their frustrations, examples of which are below.

Hamstring injuries are crucial for any athlete, especially when they involve a running back who is already in his 30s. Jones will take more than a month to recover before he can get back to playing fitness.

Jordan Mason and possibly Cam Akers set to deputize Aaron Jones

The Minnesota Vikings entered the 2025 season with 3 running backs on their opening-day roster. Now with Aaron Jones out for 4 games, the onus will fall on the second string back, Jordan Mason, to lead the charge.

He has played in both their opening games for a combined 24 carries. Registering 4.1 yards on average will not excite Vikings fans, but the bigger load should increase that number significantly.

What they should try to remember is that Mason was the spark for the San Francisco 49ers in the absence of Christian McCaffrey, registering 789 yards in 12 games. Their fans were unhappy when the franchise traded him to the Vikings in the offseason.

To avoid placing a lot of pressure on the 26-year-old, the Minneapolis-based team has signed free agent back Cam Akers to their practice squad. This tandem should help ease the loss of Aaron Jones.
