The New York Yankees have penned veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to a 1-year $12.5 million contract on Saturday. Both Goldschmidt and captain Aaron Judge are 2022 MVPs and will now be teammates in the Bronx.

The deal is still pending a physical but several industry sources have confirmed the news. The team signed Goldschmidt after losing out on Christian Walker to the Houston Astros. The Yankees were interested in Walker but didn’t want to lose a draft pick in compensation.

Furthermore, they kept Carlos Santana as a backup plan for Paul Goldschmidt. The 37-year-old first baseman became the pinstripe’s fourth addition since free agency started.

Before his signing, the team acquired Max Fried, Devin Williams, and Cody Bellinger. The team also finalized a contract with Jonathan Loaisiga for 1 year with a club option for 2026.

With the first baseman position filled, Bellinger will likely take the outfield position. The 2025 roster is yet to be finalized as the Yankees are also looking into third-baseman and left-handed relievers in free agency.

The 2022 NL MVP will join Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Bellinger in the lineup. If the team acquires a third baseman, Jazz Chisholm Jr. can move to his natural position at second base.

Social media reacts to Paul Goldschmidt joining the NY Yankees

Fans on social media are divided on the New York Yankees acquiring Paul Goldschmidt from the free agency. Following the veteran’s down-performance in 2024, many are questioning his capabilities to compete in the 2025 Bronx team.

After spending his first eight seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, he had a slump with the St. Louis Cardinals. He recorded a career-low of .245 with 22 homers and 65 RBIs. However, he bounced back after the All-Star break with a .799 OPS in the last 62 games.

One X user congratulated the team commenting, “Go Yanks!”. Another questioned, “How are people mad about this lol?” after negative comments on the signing. Check out more fan reactions below:

Paul Goldschmidt will replace Anthony Rizzo after the Yankees declined his club option for the 2025 season. The Yankees have also been looking into Pete Alonso, but at this point, it is unlikely to happen.

There’s a higher chance of Alonso reuniting with the NY Mets instead. The pinstripes also have international pool money and have met with Japanese ace Roki Sasaki. Whether they’ll land the pitcher or move on to settle their base options is yet to be seen.
