Aaron Judge and Team USA were stunned on Tuesday. In their final pool B game against Italy, the Americans suffered a shocking 8-6 defeat, leaving their qualification for the next stage of the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in jeopardy.
The USA had been on a dominant run until this game. Following the loss in the final game of the 2023 edition, the Americans had a strong start and emerged as 15-5 winners over Brazil. Judge, the captain of the team, would lead them to this victory while hitting a 2-run home run in his first at bat to open the scoring.
They would follow this up with a 9-1 beatdown of Great Britain before finally defeating Mexico. The United States had not won against the Mexicans in the WBC since 2006.
With a 5-3 win on Monday, the USA were 3-0 and were standing on the verge of qualification into the quarterfinals. A win over Italy would have seen them finish as group winners with a 4-0 record.
However, that did not happen. A solo home run from Kyle Teel, and 2-run shots from Sam Antonacci and Jac Caglianone would put Italy 5-0 up. Meanwhile, Michael Lorenzen would dominate from the mound, going 4.2 innings and giving up just 2 hits.

In the 6th inning, Italy would drive in 3 more runs and take an emphatic 8-0 lead. A solo home run from Gunnar Henderson in the bottom of the 6th inning opened the scoring for Team USA before a 3-run home run from Pete Crow-Armstrong made it an 8-4 game.

After pulling another run back in the 8th inning, Bryce Harper would miss the chance to tie the game with as he popped out to end the inning. With one out in the 9th inning, PCA hit his second home run of the game and made it an 8-6 game.
Bobby Witt Jr. would then hit a single before Henderson went down swinging, meaning the game came down to Aaron Judge. The American captain could have tied the game with one swing off the bat.
Unfortunately, he went down swinging, too. The New York Yankees star would strike out against Greg Weissert, sealing a historic win for Team Italy.

With this win, Italy extends its record to 3-0. Following wins against Brazil and Great Britain, they landed a heavy punch in the pool stage and took down Team USA, one of the heavy favorites. A win against Mexico in their final game could see them top the group and advance as group winners.

So what’s next for the USA? For now, they will be watching the Italy-Mexico game on Wednesday and hope things go their way.
How can Team USA and Aaron Judge qualify for the quarterfinals after loss against Italy?
Aaron Judge and his team could have been celebrating tonight had they won against Italy. Following their 8-6 loss, there is a real possibility that the 2023 runners-up could miss out on the knockout stages altogether.

At the moment, the USA is 3-1 after 4 games. Italy are 3-0 with 3 wins from 3 games, while Mexico is 2-1 with 2 wins and 1 loss from their 3 games.
If Italy win on Wednesday, they advance as group winners with a 4-0 record while America qualifies as the runners-up. Mexico meanwhile, gets eliminated with a 2-2 record.
Things get messy if Mexico win. If the North American country wins, the three teams will be tied with a 3-1 record. This is where, the tiebreaker scenarios comes in.
The primary metric to divide the team is the Runs Allowed ratio. This will be calculated by taking the fewest runs allowed and dividing them by the total number of defensive outs recorded in games played only between the tied teams.
The USA have allowed a total of 11 runs in games against Mexico and Italy. Dividing that by 54 outs they recorded, their quotient comes out to 0.2037037.
In simple terms, if Mexico wins and scores more than 6 runs, they qualify alongside the USA. If they win and score less than 5 runs, they qualify alongside Italy. This is an assumption made on the game finishing in 9 innings.
Scenarios for Italy vs Mexico tomorrow assuming it’s nine innings:
— Gordo (@BOSSportsGordo) March 11, 2026
Italy wins: Italy + USA advance
Mexico wins and scores 6 or more runs: Mexico + USA advance
Mexico wins and scores less than 5 runs: Mexico + Italy advance
—
Mexico wins and scores exactly 5 runs: Mexico…
There is a lot of Math in this. In the end, America will need a helping hand from either of these teams to reach the next stage.
