While the New York Yankees have started the 2024 season the way they had hoped for, same cannot be said about their captain Aaron Judge. Following the acquisition of Juan Soto, this duo was expected to cause havoc in the battling lineup. However, the 2022 MVP has not been able to perform at his best which led to fans booing him on Saturday.
During the game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Judge collected a golden sombrero (four strikeouts in a game). He went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in his team’s 2-0 extra-inning loss. His poor performance in this game lead to some boos from the Yankee faithful in Bronx.
This criticism though does not seem to faze him. Speaking about this reaction from the fans, 31-year-old claimed he has heard “worse” and admitted that he would be doing the same thing in their situation.
I've heard worse and I'd probably do the same thing in their situationAaron Judge said as per YES Network.
This is obviously not the first time when the Yankees fans have made their voices heard. Several players in the past including Aaron Hicks have been booed by the home crowd after their lackluster showings and Judge seems no different to them.
So far this season, Aaron Judge has been batting with an average of .183 and has just three home runs and eleven RBIs to his name. The one good thing for the Yanks has been that they had not been too reliant on him unlike last season.
Nestor Cortes backs Aaron Judge following hitter’s slump in form
The booing of Aaron Judge by some New York Yankees fans stunned many connected to the team. Pitcher Nestor Cortes has now come into the aid of Judge and backed him in this tough time.
Cortes himself went through a slump in 2023 which led to huge reactions from the fans on social media. While speaking on the booing of Judge, the southpaw agreed to the question of a reporter on whether it was “disappointing” to hear such a reaction from the supporters.
It's always disappointing...He’s done a lot for this team, a lot for this organization. He’s going to come around. It’s just a matter of time. This team is way too good to have a lot of games like today’s. He’s going to come around. He’s going to be Aaron Judge.Nestor Cortes on Aaron Judge as per YES Network.
Despite this slump of Judge, the Bronx Bombers are 15-7 so far and have the second best record in the American League behind the Cleveland Guardians (16-6). If Judge gets out of this slump quickly, the Yanks might just become unstoppable this season as they aim to end a long 14-year drought for the World Series title.
