The New York Yankees suffered another loss on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. The AL East side lost 8-4 against their division rivals after making 4 defensive errors. Following the game, captain Aaron Judge admitted that the team has not played ‘well‘ defensively in recent times.

In the first 2 games of the series, shortstop Anthony Volpe faced backlash as he made two errors in back-to-back games. On Wednesday, the defensive abilities of the team were once again questioned.

Stars like Max Fried, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Ben Rice, and Jasson Dominguez all committed errors. There were some errant throws, some misjudged balls, and fumbles that would cost the team.

The 4 errors committed by the Yankees in this game took their tally to 12 errors against the Blue Jays in 10 games. The Canadian outfit went on to win the rubber game and claimed back-to-back series triumphs against the Bronx Bombers.

Following the game on Wednesday, Aaron Judge expressed that the team needs to ‘tighten‘ up in this area going ahead.

We haven’t been playing that well on defense. That’s one of the things we’ve got to clean up. Going into this off-day, we’ve got to refocus and tighten it up on defense. If we give any good team extra outs, it’s not going to go well for us.

Aaron Judge told the reporters

This showing from the Yankees ignited some discussion regarding the comments of Joe Kelly from last year. The former Los Angeles Dodgers star took a swipe at the Yankees for their defensive performances in the World Series against them and expressed that the 2024 Fall Classic was a mismatch from the get-go.

It was a mismatch from the get-go. If we had a playoff reranking, they might be ranked the 8th or 9th best playoff team…All we knew is that we had to play regular Dodger baseball…we didn’t have to do anything crazy, and we were going to win the World Series. Look at the team, look at the talent.

Joe Kelly said on Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast

The Yankees had a disastrous showing on the field in Game 5 of the World Series. After Judge dropped an easy flyout in the 5th inning, the Yankees made a few more errors in the infield, which eventually led to the Dodgers to come back and win the game and the series.

Manager Aaron Boone claims Yankees were not good enough against Blue Jays

In the rubber game on Wednesday, the defense of the New York Yankees imploded once again, leading to furious reactions from fans on social media. Manager Aaron Boone, who was ejected from the game earlier on, later expressed that his team was not good enough against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Errors from top stars saw the Yankees leak several runs. As per Boone, his team does have a good defensive unit, but he did agree that his team needs to tighten up its defense.

Yeah, just not good enough… We’ve got to obviously tighten it up. We’ll continue to work at it. We have good defenders here, but tonight was obviously a rough night.

Aaron Boone told the reporters

This performance from the Yankees comes a day after Boone blasted the media for their questions regarding their recent struggles. In an appearance at the Talkin’ Yanks podcast, the 52-year-old would unleash at them and at those who urged for some more non-robotic answers from the players.

Speaking of the positives from this game for the Yankees, Aaron Judge hit his 37th home run of the season. His two-run home run tied the game at 4-4 and moved him up in a historic list.

This home run was his 352nd of his career. He thus surpassed Alex Rodriguez and moved up to 6th in the list for most home runs by a Yankees player. Only Babe Ruth (659), Mickey Mantle (536), Lou Gehrig (493), Joe DiMaggio (361), and Yogi Berra (358) have more home runs for the Yankees than Judge.
