In the first five games of this regular season, Mike Tomlin looked like he struck gold when Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the Pittsburgh Steelers racked up a 4-1 record.
No, the 4-time league MVP was not back to his spectacular best, but was doing enough to ensure his team was in a position to win. Then, they started losing a bunch of games, all to fellow playoff contenders.
During that time, Tomlin backed Rodgers, and vice versa, as they were still trying to work out what they were struggling with. Admittedly, the Steelers’ defense was also not playing at its best, and that compounded matters.
The veteran QB did not start in their close loss to the Chicago Bears as he was dealing with a wrist fracture. Against the Buffalo Bills at home, the 41-year-old was back to lead them.
There was hope that the Steelers would win, as their opponents were not in the best of form. However, the game turned out to be anything but a win.
I believe in the coaching staff, I believe in Mike Tomlin, so I came here. Players are going to take accountability. Myself included, and I will, and I will continue doing it, I’ve got to play better.
Aaron Rodgers told reporters
This was the Super Bowl champion’s response to a reporter asking him if Mike Tomlin and the coaches were the reason the Steelers played as flat as they did against the Bills, prompting some ‘Fire Tomlin’ chants from their fans.

Aaron Rodgers started the answer by sternly hitting back at the reporter for asking him a question with the intention of baiting him into criticizing his coaches.
Mike Tomlin responds to ‘Fire Tomlin’ chants
After speaking with Aaron Rodgers, it was the turn of Mike Tomlin to speak with the media, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Christopher Carter asked him about the chants asking the top brass to fire the head coach.
Man, I share their frustrations tonight. We didn’t do enough. That’s just the reality of it.
Mike Tomlin replied
The 53-year-old understands the frustrations of Steelers fans, as they saw a completely abysmal performance from the players. If not for Jaylen Warren‘s 1-yard rushing touchdown in the middle of the 2nd quarter, the home fans would have paid to watch a scoreless game.

On the other hand, the defense was also not at its best, as the Buffalo Bills scored 23 points in the second half. Not only did they win, but their comeback in the second session embarrassed the home team.
Aaron Rodgers suffered another injury in loss
One of the reasons Aaron Rodgers could not get it going was the injury he suffered at the start of the second half. After receiving the ball, the California native was trying to avoid the oncoming Buffalo Bills defenders.

During this commotion, it so happened that he did not see Joey Bosa coming in from his blindside. The pass rusher bear tackled the veteran QB to the ground, and his teammates scooped up the ball and scored to start the Bills’ comeback.
Rodgers got up, but was bleeding from his forehead, and was clutching his left wrist, which was heavily braced to ensure safety to his fracture.

After that play, the 10-time Pro Bowler left the field, and Mason Rudolph took over. Unfortunately, the backup threw an interception, after which the Bills scored on the following possession.
Rodgers returned on the next drive, but it seems the injury and the lack of creativity on offense stopped him from enabling his teammates to score.
