Aaron Rodgers is coming off a difficult season after suffering a rupture in his Achilles, which resulted in him being benched for the entire 2023 season and the offseason. Though the veteran quarterback took his sweet time to recover at the age of 40, he is ready to stand by the expectations the New York Jets have for him.
With the NFL season starting yesterday September 5, the Jets are preparing for their season-opening match against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday. This season not only gives Rodgers a second chance after he spent his entire debut season on the sidelines, but also decides his retirement plans to an extent.
While addressing the media on Thursday, the veteran quarterback enthusiastically opened up about his plans to achieve greatness. Since he has fully recovered now, Rodgers has gained the confidence he once had playing for the Green Bay Packers and it was well reflected in his media interaction.
I have a lot of pride in my performance, so when I take the field, I expect greatness because I've done it before. So that's the kind of standard I hold myself to.Aaron Rodgers said
Rodgers also spoke in reference to his Achilles injury which happened just four snaps into the opening game and predicted having a “little smirk” after four snaps against the 49ers.
Aaron Rodgers’ drive to prove himself in 20th NFL season
At present, the ten-time Pro Bowl is the oldest player playing in the league, about to turn 41, and has entered his 20th season in the NFL. In such a prolonged time, he has achieved immense prominence with four MVP honors, 10 Pro Bowl selections, and one Super Bowl ring.
He still feels he has something to prove. However, he concluded by saying it just had to be himself.
I've always kind of played with something on my shoulder. You have to manufacture things from time to time, but, yeah, I mean, it kind of goes back to the proving it. Who would I need to prove it to? Just myself at this point.Aaron Rodgers said
This drive to achieve greatness is what is holding the veteran from initiating his retirement process. He wants to win at least two or three Super Bowl rings before announcing his retirement from his Hall of Fame-worthy career.
