ESPN finally released The Football Power Index with some quite surprising rankings, especially in the AFC, whose members include one of the most powerful NFL teams. But one specific ranking that shocked the entire league, including football fans, was the New York Jets as the second-best roster in the AFC.
The first position in ESPN’s index is occupied by the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, who are aiming for a historic three-peat in the upcoming season. But, the second is secured by Aaron Rodgers’ Jets, surpassing Super Bowl contender teams such as the Baltimore Ravens, the Buffalo Bills, and the Cincinnati Bengals.
The favorite to win the Super Bowl is the San Francisco 49ers, who are also ranked top in the NFC. But since the competition in NFC is less, the 49ers’ chances to dominate the conference are 16% higher than the others. The Chiefs are the second favorite, followed by the Ravens and the Detroit Lions.
But undoubtedly the one ranking which stole all attention was the Jets as second-best in the AFC. This offseason, the Jets made significant changes in their roster and their strategy to approach the season. Last season, head coach Robert Saleh gave the ropes of the offense in the hands of Rodgers and OC Nathaniel Hackett, but this season, Saleh is actively contributing to the offense as well as the defense.
As per FPI, the Jets’ offensive line is fixed with the return of ten-time Pro Bowler quarterback, entering his 20th season. If he plays as per his reputation and without any injury, the Jets could indeed become one of the most dangerous teams in the AFC.
Fan reaction to Jets ranked second-best in AFC
The Jets’ addition of Malachi Corley and Mike Williams is considered to complement Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson perfectly. Their offense is already solid, all they need for it to become elite is to function properly. Despite these facts by FPI, the team’s ranking has shocked everyone and fans didn’t hold back from expressing it.
One fan wrote, “Jets at 2 is utterly ridiculous,” while another wrote, “The Jets WR1 would be WR3 on the Dolphins. Please stop the cap.” Here are some of the fan reactions:
Netizens argued that such hype of the Jets is unreasonable and out of control, as they are not even the best team within their division. Some even suggested that the Jets paid bribes for this analysis and ranking.
