Mike Williams is not a typical loud-mouthed diva that most top wide receivers are. He prefers to keep it quiet and do the talking on the field. But once he caught the game-winning touchdown for the Pittsburgh Steelers, he decided to subtly speak out against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.

The former MVP called out the receiver for running the wrong route in that close loss to the Buffalo Bills. Since then, it was a foregone conclusion that Mike Williams was on his way out. The following week that happened as the wideout found himself practicing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 30-year-old receiver did initially try to calm the rhetoric around the criticism. But as soon as he got the chance, he responded in the most subtle way he could think off. Often shy about revealing his true feelings, he took to social media to troll Rodgers’ route running criticism.

The New York Jets quarterback also tried to play it cool as Pat McAfee informed him about the trade while on live television. But reporters wanted to know if the latest troll from the now Pittsburgh Steelers game winner had any impact on Rodgers.

That’s fine. I don’t have anything. I like Mike. I’m happy for Mike.

He said this with a wide smile once the reporter informed him what the troll was about. The smile broke out as soon as the reporter said, ‘red line’, suggesting the 40-year-old knew all too well what the intention was. But his words towards the end suggested he was fine with what Mike Williams did, as he did not want to drag it on.

Aaron Rodgers has to make it work with his elite receiving core

The trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers came about after Davante Adams was brought in. That too, Aaron Rodgers’ friend came in right after Williams’ slip up. That situation meant the now former teammate was not going to get as many targets with Adams starting.

For Mike Williams though, it became a blessing in disguise as the Steelers have almost made him WR2. He repaid their interest in him with that game-winner in his first start. But it has not been the same for the New York Jets receivers.

They did win the game against the Houston Texans, but that game was all about Garrett Wilson‘s incredible one-hand catches and touchdowns. Adams did have a touchdown in that game, but he has yet to produce the game-winning performances of old.

That has brought an increasingly uncomfortable situation for the Jets receivers. As now, Aaron Rodgers has the firepower, but they have not been firing together as a unit. They do create mismatches on the field, but are not matching up with their quarterback.

If the New York Jets are to reach the playoffs, that core of Adams, Wilson and whenever Allen Lazard returns, have to catch fire, together. Else they can start preparing for next season and play upcoming games to fix their issues.
