Disaster evaded. Broderick Jones nearly went from being an Aaron Rodgers savior to sending the veteran quarterback to the IR within a span of a few weeks.

On Thursday (October 16), the Pittsburgh Steelers trailed the underdog Bengals by six points with a little over two minutes until the final whistle.

Rodgers ran the ball with Jaylen Warren twice, which brought the Steelers close to the halfway mark. It was all the four-time NFL MVP needed to throw a defense-splitting pass to tight end Pat Freiermuth.

The fifth-year starter covered 68 yards to score a touchdown. Traveling Pittsburgh supporters jumped in joy as it tied the scores.

Steelers offensive tackle Broderick Jones got a little too excited, and he jumped onto his quarterback’s back. Rodgers, 41, couldn’t handle the 311-pound lineman’s body weight ramming into him as he fell face-first on the Paycor turf.

Cameras caught him shouting at Jones before being dragged away from the scene.

It’s easy to figure out the reason behind Rodgers’s reaction. Just 26 months ago, he tore an ACL during his New York Jets debut, which kept him out of action the entire 2023 season.

Even if Jones did not have any malicious intent when he bear-hugged Rodgers from behind, the result could have been devastating.

Aaron Rodgers remains optimistic despite losing his second game as the Steelers quarterback

The Steelers arrived in Cincinnati as the overwhelming favorites to defeat the struggling Bengals. However, after throwing the first touchdown to Jonnu Smith, Rodgers conceded back-to-back interceptions, which allowed the Bengals to get a foothold in the game.

Joe Flacco, who replaced Jake Browning, completed TD passes to Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. In fact, Flacco targeted Chase 23 times (NFL record for a night primetime game) and connected with him 16 times across the four quarters.

Rodgers, meanwhile, found his third tight end, Darnell Washington, roaming free inside the Bengals’ end zone four minutes into the fourth quarter. The 6-foot-7 behemoth scored a 2-yard touchdown, which brought the Steelers within just four points of the Bengals’ score.

Freiermuth scored his second TD of the tie, but all of their efforts were in vain. The Bengals kicker, Evan McPherson, went three for three on field goals before dispatching one from 36 yards to steal a much-needed victory for Cincy.

Rodgers finished with 67% pass completion, 4 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. According to NFL stat researcher Dante Koplowitz Fowler, this was Rodgers’ 6th career loss after throwing 4 TDs in a game.

Despite the losing game, the Steelers are 4-2 and first in the AFC North. Rodgers believes that they can get back to winning ways in the upcoming games.

We had a chance to really open up some space, but we’re 4-2, still 1st in division, got home games coming up, another Sunday night opportunity against my former team. I’m not going to ride the rollercoaster, and I know Mike isn’t. Hopefully, you guys follow suit.

Rodgers, after six games as a Steeler, has completed 118 passes from 172 attempts (68.6%) for 1270 yards (15th best, sandwiched between Bo Nix and Jordan Love), 14 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions.
