Despite receiving dozens of advice about retiring, Aaron Rodgers firmly believes that now is not the time for him to hang his cleats. But it appears he has given up on the New York Jets amidst the struggling 3-8 record.

NFL Insider Diana Russini reported that the four-time NFL MVP no longer wants to stay with the Jets and wants to move to another team in 2025. After recovering from his torn ACL injury, Rodgers had high aspirations of leading New York to the Super Bowl– for which the team acquired him from the Green Bay Packers in 2023. However, when those aspirations fell short, his relationship with owner Woody Johnson became strained.

After conversations with sources with the team and around the league, my understanding is that Rodgers still wants to play in 2025, just not for the New York Jets

Diana Russini reported

Johnson apparently lost faith in the future Hall of Famer to end the Jets’ 14-year playoff drought, which is known to be the longest in major professional sports leagues. As they already lost this season, there have been speculations that the team is thinking of benching Rodgers, which could signify the conclusion of his tumultuous time with the Jets.

Despite Rodgers’ influence, Johnson made two significant decisions very recently, firing Robert Saleh– who didn’t take long to find a new position and General Manager Joe Douglas, and now burdened with replacing them.

Fan reaction to Aaron Rodgers wanting to leave the Jets next season

Interestingly, the Jets owner suggested benching the 40-year-old quarterback following the disappointing loss against the Denver Broncos on September 30. Many thought he said “in jest,” while others were convinced he was being serious about it. Regardless, it seems that his relationship with Rodgers has become strained since then.

Many football fans did not take the report of Rodgers wanting a way out of the Green Gang well, especially considering his involvement in the decisions to fire Saleh and add his former teammate Davante Adams. One fan wrote, “Most toxic QB to ever play the game,” while another exclaimed, “He ain’t Brady… but thinks he is.” Here are some of the fan reactions:

While the Jets continued their playoff drought this season, Rodgers recorded his worst season in his two-decade career playing in the NFL. The major reason he was advised to retire is to protect his legacy as a future Hall of Famer, which he established during his time in Green Bay.
