When Aaron Rodgers came to the New York Jets, it was expected that his throws to Garrett Wilson will light up the league. Last season his injury prevented it, but it built up the expectations heading into this season.

In their last game on Thursday Night Football, Wilson received his first touchdown from his 40-year-old quarterback. But other than that, he has not had a stellar campaign so far.

After their win, the four-time league MVP was asked by reporters at the post-game press conference about the lack of connections between him and his young wideout.

The entire focus of all three defenses we've played have been taking Garrett away. It's been Mel Kiper's worst nightmare. Been a lot of cover 2. When there's times when we get one high, we try to go to him. But a lot of 2 high, in all three games. They are shading to him, even with stud corners.
Aaron Rodgers replied

His point makes it clear that opposition defenses were focused on covering Garrett Wilson throughout the game. He feels that is the reason the 24-year-old has averaged a mere 50 yards per game so far.

Quite a small number when considering that he is generally expected to burn the grass to 100-yard games every now and then. But Aaron Rodgers‘ point also makes sense when considering that all the three teams they played so far had stud defenses. More importantly is their use of their best defensive backs on Wilson.

If that was not enough according to Rodgers, they slid their safety onto him for protection too. These situations have led to some frustrations for the young wideout. But with more snaps under their belt, the duo should start torching defenses soon.

Aaron Rodgers feels his connection with Garrett Wilson will be special

NFL on Prime Video reporter Kaylee Hartung asked the former Super Bowl champion about his partnerships with Allen Lazard. To this Rodgers also gave a shoutout to young Wilson.

Allen and I have a good rapport. And once 5 (Garrett Wilson) and I get on that same page, it's going to be special.
Aaron Rodgers said

Having been in the league for a long time, Rodgers knows all too well that it is just a matter of time before his connection with Wilson takes off. For that to happen, they need to practice and study defenses together.

With a bye week coming up, they have the time to do just that. Not only can they take the time and study how three elite defenses covered him, but they will also have the time to practice some new concepts before shifting their focus on the next game. The New York Jets need these two to work out how to get better together.

The next game against the Denver Broncos will again bring a top corner in Patrick Surtain II to cover Garrett Wilson. But the rest of the defense are not that good enough like the previous games. Maybe Aaron Rodgers can take advantage of that and get his younger partner in crime going.
