The Indian Test cricket team is on a high, after having completed a fruitful English summer. Captain Shubman Gill and his boys fought extremely hard to level the series at 2-2. As many have already said, it appears to be the best five match encounter on English soil for a while now. However, not every player in the Indian squad could make a substantial impact on the series.
There were three players who couldn’t make their names appear in the playing XI, stirring a lot of talk on social media about how much they also deserved to be part of the playing XI in a couple of Test matches. Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav and Abhimanyu Easwaran have been the talk of the town, and many demanded their spot in the playing XI. Singh eventually got injured and Yadav has played fair share of matches for India at the highest level.
However, many feel Abhimanyu Easwaran has been robbed consistently of a spot in the team despite performing day in day out for his state side. There have been many shout outs to the Indian management by many cricket experts as well to give Easwaran a game.
As things stand now, the batter may have to wait a while before he gets a go. Easwaran’s father has been vocal about his son’s chances in the Indian team. He has often claimed that he felt unfortunate that Easwaran is not getting his due chance. In a recent interview, Easwaran’s father spoke at length about his son’s chances and also gave an insight into what is going on in the batter’s mind after repeatedly being kept at bay.
Abhi was pissed off because he wasn’t picked. When I called, he said, ‘Dad, I still haven’t found a place’. He was disturbed, but said, ‘I’ve lived my dream for 23 years, not getting picked for 1-2 games won’t shatter that’.

Easwaran was clearly disappointed after not getting a game for the side, and his father mentioned that vividly. However, the batter chooses to remain positive and believes that he is not far away from getting a go in the final XI. He is determined to make sure two years of being kept on the bench doesn’t hamper a dream that he has lived forever.

Easwaran has scored 7674 runs in domestic cricket for Bengal at an impressive average of 48.87. The right-handed batter has 27 centuries to his name with a highest score of 233. With such impactful numbers, he is due for an extended run in the international side. With two home Test series for India in the upcoming months, there is a good possibility that Easwaran makes a solid start to his Test career.
Where can Abhimanyu Easwaran fit in India’s Test set up?
The selectors do face a dilemma when it comes to adding Abhimanyu Easwaran to the Test XI. Easwaran has opened the innings for a long time when it comes to his state side of Bengal. However, it would be tough for him to slide into the same role for the Indian team as both Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul seem to have cemented those spots. They have consistently performed in the last few months and have shown great adaptability with each other.

Number four has been made all his by Captain Shubman Gill with some remarkable knocks in the recently concluded series. The best chance Sudarshan has is at number 3 or number 6. With Rishabh Pant locking number 5, these two positions still seem to have some scope for a new entrant. Karun Nair and Sai Sudarshan were auditioned in these spots in the England tour, and both haven’t had a below par series.
While selectors will look to persist with Sudarshan as he is a left hander and a youngster himself, Nair may have Easwaran knocking on his door. This makes for an interesting three-way story for just two spots, adding to the problems for the selectors.
The problem of plenty is a good problem to have but maybe end up disappointing one player who stays left out. Any slip up from either Sudarshan or Nair will give Easwaran an entry, but for that he must wait patiently.
