Young Indian opener and world no.1-ranked T20I batter Abhishek Sharma’s father Rajkumar Sharma talked about his son’s early beginnings before making it to the top. Sharma Sr. also acknowledged the pivotal role ex-India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has played in shaping Abhishek’s cricketing future.

Abhishek Sharma has quickly transcended into becoming one of the finest T20 batters of the time, since making his debut for India in 2024. The young left-handed opener rose to prominence in 2018 as a hard-hitting all-rounder, being a key member of the team that lifted the 2018 u-19 World Cup. After spending a few years in the domestic cricket circuit and the IPL, Sharma got his senior call-up against Zimbabwe.

Sharma impressed Indian cricket fans with a mesmerizing hundred in only his second T20I appearance. Since then, he has not looked back, scoring 565 runs in 18 T20Is at an average of 33.23 and a strike rate of 195.40, hitting two centuries and two fifties. The 25-year-old has also bowled at times, picking up six wickets with his left-arm spin. In the ongoing 2025 Asia Cup, he has scored 61 runs in two games so far.

It is no secret that former India all-rounder and 2011 WC-winning icon Yuvraj Singh mentored Sharma during his early years, helping him become the destructive batter he is today. Apart from Yuvraj, the 25-year-old’s abilities can also be attributed to the foundation laid by his father Rajkumar Sharma, who played nine first-class and three List A matches for Delhi. He most recently appeared on a video shared by the BCCI, titled ‘The Making of Abhishek Sharma’.

The 61-year-old talked about the guidance that his son received from Yuvraj Singh, who took his game to the next level by sharing insights about his own experiences. As the Punjab star continues to thrive, Rajkumar also spoke about how Abhishek became fearlessness, revealing hat he made his son face deliveries over 150 kmph during his u-16 days, ignoring warnings about injury concerns.

He also noted how Abhishek often insisted upon playing faster deliveries, improving his power-hitting. He could be seen saying in the clip:

Yuvraj Singh also has a huge part to play in his [Abhishek Sharma] making. He spent a lot of time with him, gave him advice and shared his experience, so thanks to him as well. Yuvi has helped him a lot to give international-level experience.

Furthermore, Rajkumar Sharma highlighted the cricket-centric atmosphere at home that helped shape Abhishek’s career. The 61-year-old revealed that his son used to often asked for help from his two sisters to practice at night. Rajkumar believes that his son’s relentless desire was the key factor in his rise, and mentioned that senior players in Punjab had predicted that teenager Abhishek Sharma would make it big.

When I used to train Abhishek [Sharma], I made him face bowlers who bowled 150 kmph during his under-16 days. All the kids used to say, ‘paaji he might get hurt’…

Nonetheless, the 25-year-old will next be seen in action on Friday, when India takes on Oman in the final group stage clash of the Asia Cup. Abhishek Sharma is attempting to forge a new opening partnership with Shubman Gill, who has made his return to the Indian T20I squad after a year-long absence.
