Borna Coric vs Márton Fucsovics : Preview
Coric was unseeded at this year’s Rotterdam Open 2021. This twenty four year old Croatian beat Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands 6-4 7-6 in the first round. In the second, Coric got the better of Dušan Lajović 6-3 6-2. Dušan Lajović incidentally is the one who knocked out top seed Daniil Medvedev in the first round.
Coric’s biggest test came in the third round match against Kei Nishikori of Japan. Both the sets of that match went into tiebreaks and Coric held his nerve to win both sets and the match 7-6 7-6. Coric’s Semi Final opponent is Márton Fucsovics. Fucsovics came into the main draw of this tournament through qualifiers.
In the main draw, his first test was against the giant 6 foot 11 inches tall Reilly Opelka. In a hard fought match, Fucsovics triumphed 7-6 6-7 7-6. His second round match was a straightforward affair against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Fucsovics won 6-3 6-2. In the Quarter Finals he beat Tommy Paul 6-4 6-3.

The two players have met twice on the tour, and Coric leads the head to head 3-0. Their last meeting was at the 2020 Paris Masters which Coric won 7-6 6-1.

Coric as a teenager was one of the few tennis players who had beaten Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray. But his career hasn’t progressed as it should have. Post lockdown his best performance has been reaching the Quarter Final of the US open. He also reached the Finals of the St. Petersburg Open.
Couric’s style of play can best be defined as a defensive baseliner. His backhand game is much better than his forehand one. Fucsovics caused a major upset last month when he beat Stan Wawrinka in the second round of a five set encounter.
Fucsovics doesn’t have a great serve or a lot of power, but what he does have is guile. If you are not playing well, he Fucsovics can certainly take advantage. He is trying to become the second qualifier to reach the Finals of the Rotterdam Open.
