Medvedev is enjoying a real purple patch in his career right now. Leading up to the ATP Rotterdam 2021 event, he has won three of the four tournaments he has participated in. His only defeat came at the hands of Novak Djokovic in the Finals of the Australian Open. He has won the Paris Masters, the ATP World Tour Finals and the ATP Cup.

At the ATP Rotterdam 2021 he is seeded no.1. His first round opponent Lajovic is unseeded at the ATP Rotterdam 2021, and is coming off a first round defeat against Dennis Novak at the ATP Open Sud de France. Lajovic had a decent outing at the Australian Open where he reached the fourth round, but was ousted at that point by Alexander Zverev 6-4 7-6 6-3. He has one ATP Title so far, the Croatian Open that he won in 2019.
