Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao powered AC Milan to a brilliant 3-2 comeback victory over Inter Milan to secure the 2024-25 Supercoppa Italiana title. It marked the Rossoneri’s eighth Super Cup title, and their first win in the last nine years. The thrilling matchup happened at the Al-Awwal Park stadium in Riyadh.

AC Milan also denied Simone Inzaghi’s side, what would have been their fourth consecutive Super Cup trophy. Milan’s win provides a major boost to newly appointed manager Sergio Conceicao‘s tenure, with the manager having claimed a trophy after just two matches in charge. The Portuguese manager was most recently brought in to replace Paulo Fonseca, owing to the club’s poor start to the Serie A season.

Inter had taken an early lead into the match through Lautaro Martinez‘s opener in the 45th minute. Mehdi Taremi then doubled Inter’s lead in the 47th minute, putting them in a comfortable position. Rafael Leao’s substitution in the 50th minute turned things around.

The Portuguese winger won a free kick, which was slotted home by Theo Hernandez. Christian Pulisic scored a brilliant 80th minute equalizer and Tammy Abraham tapped in the ball from Leao’s assist to seal an impressive comeback win. 

Moreover, it was a perfect cameo for 25-year-old Rafael Leao, who was a direct contributor to all three goals for AC Milan. Meanwhile, manager Sergio Conceicao, after the Supecoppa win, will now hope to recreate the same form in order to put AC Milan’s Serie A campaign back on track.

Lautaro Martinez admits Inter Milan ‘stopped playing’, following dismal Supercoppa final defeat to AC Milan

Inter Milan suffered their third defeat of the ongoing season. They collapsed in the second half in a humiliating Supercoppa final loss to arch-rivals AC Milan. Despite the Nerazzurri taking a comfortable 2-0 first half lead, they eventually went on to suffer a 3-2 loss.

Skipper Lautaro Martinez, who scored the 45th minute opener, spoke out on the team’s poor display after the match. The Argentinian forward admitted that things stopped going in their favor once the intensity went down.

We had gone 2-0 up, but then Inter just stopped playing, didn’t have the same intensity we had until that moment and in these games you pay the price for that.

Nonetheless, Inter Milan will hope to compensate by claiming the pole position on the Serie A table. The club now has 40 points from 17 matches, and remains 3rd in the standings. However, Inter is only four points behind league leaders Napoli, with two matches in hand. The season is not over for them yet, with plenty of time to recover.
