Morocco penned history in Paris as they clinched their first-ever Olympic medal in football after a lopsided encounter against Egypt in the third-place play-off. Half-a-dozen goals were smashed by the Moroccans under the leadership of PSG star, Achraf Hakimi, who himself scored a sizzling curler to join in on the party.
Before participating in the Paris Olympics, Morocco’s U-23 side never made it past the group stages. However, Paris was a different tale for them as they moved forward with momentum. Even though their juggernaut came to a halt against the eventual winners, Spain, they kept on imposing themselves most stunningly against the Egyptian might.
It was the 87th minute of the game when Morocco was already leading by a staggering margin of 5-0. Hakimi stepped up for the free-kick and slammed home from range, asserting the Moroccan domination in its boldest and most flamboyant form as they laid waste to Egypt.
Abde Ezzalzouli opened the scoring for Morocco in the 23rd minute while Soufiane Rahimi battered home the second within just three minutes of the opening strike. Bilal El Khannouss scored the third goal for Morocco while Rahimi added to his tally by scoring Morocco’s fourth. Akram Nakach smashed a fifth in the 73rd minute before the 87th-minute wonder strike from their captain, Achraf Hakimi.
Here’s how Morocco went on to win bronze in the Paris Olympics
Morocco started their Paris Olympics with a controversial 2-1 win against Argentina in the Group Stages followed by a defeat against Ukraine. However, they were quick to turn the tide around in stunning fashion as they put three past Iraq to close the group stages in a blaze of glory with Ezzalzouli, Rahimi, and Amir Richardson finding the back of the net.
In the quarter-finals, Morocco blew apart the United States by 4-0 as Rahimi, Ilias Akhomach, Hakimi and Mehdi Maouhoub were a part of the scoring sheet. Despite securing a lead against Spain in the semi-finals through Rahimi’s spot-kick, they couldn’t sustain themselves as La Roja hammered a couple of goals to shun their gold medal hopes. However, coming back strongly enough, they managed to overpower Egypt comprehensively in the third-place play-off snatching the Olympic bronze in football for the first time.
