Australian Cricket Team suffered a crushing defeat by 295 runs in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Marnus Labuschagne, the number three batter of the side, faced the most wrath as he scored just five runs across both innings of the Test match.
He has been brutally out of form in the recent Test innings and calls are being made for his exclusion from the team in the upcoming Test match in Adelaide. Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter, Adam Gilchrist has backed Marnus in this tough time and has asked the players and team management to remind him that he is a good batter.
Gilchrist feels that he has shown the technique and patience to survive, and score runs in Test cricket for a number of years.
Labuschagne has played 92 innings in Test matches so far and has scored 4,119 runs at an average of 48.45 with 11 centuries and 20 half-centuries. However, the Australian number three seemingly had no intention to score runs during his stay at the crease in the first Test. He was trapped in front of the stumps by Mohammed Siraj in the first innings, and he shouldered arms to an incoming delivery from Jasprit Bumrah in the second.
Adam Gilchrist feels that Marnus Labuschagne should not allow self-doubt to creep in
Gilchrist feels that players who have played as many matches as Labuschagne has, will inevitably face a time when they suffer and lack runs, as Marnus is experiencing now. He added that Marnus should not let self-doubt creep into his mind but should instead trust the skills that have helped him score runs up to this point.
The second Test match will be a Day/Night fixture with the Pink ball that will kick off on December 6. In the Indian camp, captain Rohit Sharma will be back after missing the first Test on the occasion of the birth of his baby boy. Shubman Gill is also set to feature after missing the opening Test due to a fractured thumb.
