Dan Orlovksy may be one of the leading analysts in the sports broadcasting today with sharp-witted delivery and bold takes, but his past won’t ever not be on the radar. The renowned ESPY nominee and analyst was a quarterback for the Detroit Lions and infamously being a bust in that role.

The First Take episode on Monday started with Dan Orlovsky, joined by Adam Schefter, Stephen A. Smith, and Mike Tannenbaum, delving into a discussion about the Cleveland Browns’ rookie, Dillon Gabriel. Orlovsky heaped praise on Gabriel for his preseason debut, posting a 13-for-18, 143-yard showing. However, Smith called him out almost immediately for ignoring the pick-six interception and fumble.

Smith continued to criticize Orlovsky, alleging that the analyst tends to find the good in every quarterback. He added that Orlovsky often tends to lack objectivity when it comes to analyzing quarterbacks.

If there is a silver lining to discover about a quarterback, to all of the quarterbacks in college, in pros, damn it, in prep: if there is an explanation to assuage concerns about you at the quarterback position, Dan Orlovsky will find it. I mean, this brother doesn’t have objectivity when it comes to quarterbacks.

Stephen A. Smith said

Smith and Orlovsky’s sparring is no first-time thing, though. Amid Orlovsky’s repeated chants of assuring the audience and the panelists that he does have objectivity, NFL Insider Adam Schefter sneaked in a subtle jab aimed at Orlovsky’s much less colorful past.

I believe Dan is objective; he’s speaking his mind about quarterbacks. Listen, he is much better at evaluating quarterbacks than he is at playing quarterback.

Adam Schefter quipped

However, it wasn’t as nasty as their heated argument debating the Dallas Cowboys quarterback last November. The reaction was more in alignment with the time when Schefter unbuttoned Orlovsky’s shirt on a broadcast in early January. The controversial broadcaster took no offense to the statement as he concurred that it was one hundred percent true.

Well, to make things more interesting, it was, after all, Dan Orlovsky’s birthday. It’s not a daily occurrence that an ESPN co-worker calls another out for their rose-tinted glasses.

What was Dan Orlovsky’s detailed take on Dillon Gabriel’s debut?

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky’s take, although it wasn’t airtight, had some content and backing. While the panelists dismissed and laughed off the analyst for what he put forth, the take was supported by both the tape and the statistics.

On Get Up, Orlovsky highlighted Gabriel’s efficiency, noting similarities to Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

The efficiency and how he moves, the ball placement that he has. The understanding of how quickly he was operating was a big deal to me. Going underneath center and running some of their play-action game, because it’s not necessarily something he’s done in his past. For me, that was the big thing.

Dan Orlovsky explained

Orlovsky also emphasized Gabriel’s ability to function under center and execute play-action, a facet less familiar to him in previous systems. The numbers add weight to Orlovsky’s argument.

Shedeur Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards with two touchdowns, giving him a 61% completion rate and 6.0 yards per attempt. Gabriel, meanwhile, went 13-for-18 for 143 yards, finishing with a 72% completion rate and 7.9 yards per attempt. Despite turnovers, his efficiency and ball placement, particularly in tight coverage, stood out.

Orlovsky’s evaluation may not align with popular opinion, but it is far from baseless. However, the time of theories is far from over. The Browns’ head coach, Kevin Stefanski, announced that the team decided to opt for the safest and trustworthy option, Joe Flacco, to start the season against the Cincinnati Bengals.
