The PGA Tour has upped its efforts to get the merger deal done with the Public Investment Fund (PIF). Last week, tour commissioner Jay Monahan along with player-director Adam Scott and Tiger Woods met Donald Trump at the White House regarding this matter. On Tuesday, Scott opened up about this ‘positive’ meeting with him.

The PGA Tour and the PIF had announced a framework agreement between them in 2023. Commissioner Monahan and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan would sit down together and inform about this development in June of that year, leaving the world of golf in major shock.

Since then they have been working to try to get this deal over the line. The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is reported to have become a massive roadblock for this deal. With Trump now in charge, the tour asked for his assistance and help them to complete this deal with the PIF of Saudi Arabia.

Speaking ahead of the Genesis Invitational this week, the former Masters champion revealed some details of the meeting. He claimed that the meeting lasted around 40 minutes at the Oval Office.

It’s just a positive thing that the President of the United States is such a lover of the game of golf and understands some of the challenges facing the professional game at the moment. Given how things are sitting with the Department of Justice… he hopefully will be very helpful for the professional game and help everybody move forward.

As per reports from NBC Sports, this meeting was set up by Woods, who is close to Trump. Scott later pointed out how Trump being a fan of Woods and the PGA Tour could be “very helpful” for them going forward.

Trump is a huge admirer of golf. The 47th U.S. President has several golf properties across the country and he can be seen teeing up with some big names. Before being re-elected as the President, Trump had claimed that he could wrap up the merger deal within 15 minutes.

Is the PGA Tour-PIF merger deal done following Donald Trump’s intervention?

Donald Trump obviously has huge power in his hands. However, a big question in the minds of golf fans is – has his influence and administration actually got the deal merger deal between the PGA Tour and PIF done?

In an episode of the Golf Channel Podcast, insider Rex Hoggard claimed following Trump’s intervention, the PGA Tour and PIF have reached a financial agreement. He also mentioned that the two parties have lined up multiple options in front of the DOJ regarding this deal.

What this boils down to by all accounts is that the PGA Tour and PIF have come to financial terms of what this would look like. And actually, my understanding, numerous versions of this. They’ve put that in front of the Department of Justice.

So is the merger deal done – No. Has the merger deal gotten closer to going through – Yes. The reports also claimed that the deal could be announced by the end of the first quarter of 2025. Will that actually happen or not now remains to be seen.
