While the first event of the new PGA Tour season rolls on in Hawaii, the talks about the final event – Tour Championship have surfaced. According to reports, the tour is eyeing a bracket-style format for this event. Former Masters champion Adam Scott is “unsure” how this format would work.

As per The Athletic, the tour is in “advanced discussions” to revamp the final event of the year. At the moment, the Tour Championship has “Starting Strokes” format. Players start with a staggered score based on their FedEx Cup standings.

This format has often received criticism from the fans as the leader starts the event 10-under. In 2024, Scottie Scheffler began the event 10-under and by the end of the first round, he had a seven-shot lead.

The tour is now considering both stroke play and match play as options while also discussing the possibilities of a “bye” based on FedEx Cup points.

When asked about his thoughts on this new bracket style format, Adam Scott claimed that it would hard to see where the match play would fit in professional golf. Scott, who is one of the player-director on the PGA Tour policy board, said that the tour would have to convince him more to agree with this new change.

I’m pretty much open-minded to explore anything but I’m unsure about that. It’s hard to see where match play fits into pro golf. We play the whole season one way and then have the final week be head-to-head match play, I mean, we can have a look at it, but you’d have to kind of sell me on that just a little more.

Adam Scott said as per Golfweek

Scott further added that the Tour Championship has lost his stature as a prestigious achievement due to the FedEx Cup. From the 2007 to 2018 season, the Tour Championship crowned two winners – one who wins at East Lake and one who tops the FedEx Cup standings. This often created confusion among golf fans.

Scottie Scheffler previously called Tour Championship format as “silly”

Scottie Scheffler had an amazing season in 2024. The World No.1 won several times last year and was crowned the Tour Championship winner. However, the American took a shot at the event’s format and had labeled it “silly“.

Speaking before the tournament in August, the two-time major champion had raised questions regarding the structure of this event. He would denounce this playoffs to determine the season-long champion of the PGA Tour.

I talked about it the last few years. I think it’s silly. You can’t call it a season-long race and have it come down to one tournament. Hypothetically, we get to East Lake and my neck flares up and it doesn’t heal the way it did at The Players; I finish 30th in the FedEx Cup because I had to withdraw from the last tournament? Is that really the season-long race? No. It is what it is.

Scottie Scheffler said in the press conference before the Tour Championship

What changes will the PGA Tour now bring in to this event remains to be seen. The 2025 event will take place from August 20-24 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, the permanent home of the tournament since 2004.
