NBA fans for a good number of years have joked about a rivalry between Wojnarowski and Shams Charania, both of whom were known by fans for breaking major NBA news. However, beyond the rivalry story portrayed by the media and fans, both of them worked at Yahoo Sports before Wojnarowski left.
Wojnarowski’s shocking decision to step down was significant, as it was reported that he had walked away from a substantial $20 million offer from ESPN. And as he did at Yahoo Sports, his exit paved the way for the growth of Charania.
Jeff Passan’s reaction to Shams Charania getting ESPN’s NBA role
It was a major loss for ESPN when Adrian Wojnarowski left his position last month to take on the role of General Manager for the basketball team at his alma mater. However, as change is inevitable, replacements had to be made and rumors circulated about potential candidates, which included Jeff Passan from MLB and Adam Schefter from NFL.
And with the announcement of Shams Charania as Woj’s successor, Jeff Passan celebrated the announcement in a light-hearted way. He shared a GIF from The Wolf of Wall Street on X to mark the moment.
Baseball’s better anyway.

And while Charania would be stepping into Wojnarowski’s shoes, he is already well-established in the NBA reporting world, and shouldn’t take long to adapt.
As for Wojnarowski, he finds himself in uncharted territory, as he will be tasked to guide his alma mater team through the evolving landscape of college sports, particularly in the name, image, and likeness (NIL) era.
