At Full Gear 2023, it was declared that Will Ospreay would be joining AEW full-time after leaving NJPW. The time arrived in February 2024, when he bid adieu to the Japanese promotion and settled on the Jacksonville-based promotion. Ospreay was made All Elite on February 28 and has now started his wrestling journey with the AEW Revolution. Now that The Aerial Assassin has submerged into AEW, a potential dream match against himself has been put forth by veteran Rob Van Dam.
While speaking on his 1 of a Kind Podcast, Rob Van Dam claims to have pioneered a period in wrestling history. He thus sees Ospreay doing the same thing in these current times of wrestling. RVD states that he brought a lot of stuff during his time, which has transformed into a style today. And now, the 30-year-old shows resemblance even in that by showing his exceptional wrestling abilities.
‘The Whole Damn Thing’ does not know what to expect in order to bring the dream match into reality. However, he recalled his win-loss record, where he has two wins in a total of three matches, which is a pretty good score now. Going ahead, the success of Will Ospreay can lead him to square off with the veteran.
I think that we’re both pioneers from different time periods. You know, I’ve brought in a lot of stuff and style back in the day that has become a style.Rob Van Dam about a potential match with Will Ospreay
Van Dam’s match in AEW happened in February when he teamed up with “Hangman” Adam Page and Hook. However, he wrestled in a losing effort against the Mogul Embassy and Samoa Joe. On the other hand, Ospreay has delivered two back-to-back five-star matches while wrestling on Revolution against Konosuke Takeshita and on Dynamite against Kyle Fletcher.
Will Ospreay opines on who will succeed him in NJPW
Will Ospreay has left NJPW to join AEW full-time. The Aerial Assassin was one of the top talents in the Japanese promotion, and now his absence will be felt by their fans. The question thus raised was whether Ospreay’s replacement would come in the form of yet another talented wrestler who could fill his spot.
While speaking on the Talk is Jericho podcast, Ospreay claims that NJPW would go with Zack Sabre Jr. He feels that would be the right decision, considering his talent and language fluency. He mentioned that David Finlay‘s push is also something deserving, as his hard work has brought him to this stage.
I guess they’re gonna go with Zack now. I think that’s the right decision. The guy’s nearly fluent in Japanese as well. Will Ospreay about Zack Sabre Jr. succeeding him in NJPW
Ospreay also hopes for the best of NJPW and does not want his fans to overlook that product now. He wants people to be invested in New Japan even in the top talents’ absence. Ospreay believes that Jack Perry going there is a testament to AEW-NJPW’s better relationship even after that on-screen portrayal.
