How often does it happen when WWE goes after something and they don’t get it? Well, it has been the case of late. Having said that, the major name they were heavily seeking, Will Ospreay, is now All Elite. Last night at the Kia Forum, Tony Schiavone introduced The Aerial Assassin as AEW’s newest signee. The packed house in Inglewood popped in unison upon Ospreay’s emergence.
As soon as the 30-year-old got into the ring, he wasted no time in officially putting pen to paper. And then the Essex-born wrestler addressed the crowd and let everyone know that he’s not coming in just yet. In fact, he begged the AEW fans to let him finish what he started in NJPW back in 2016. Will Ospreay promised to be on the road for Revolution pay-per-view.
Moreover, he asked Tony Khan to line up his best superstars and present him with one for next year’s show at Wembley Stadium. Shortly after his segment, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful disclosed some more details behind Will Ospreay’s AEW signing. According to Sapp, Ospreay had NJPW’s blessing to sign with Tony Khan’s promotion. Moreover, as mentioned in the promo, he’ll fulfill his remaining commitments too.
As of now, he’s set to reside in the United Kingdom. Though it may change in the future, he’s not leaving his motherland for now. Prior to this night, there was an unbridled brouhaha regarding Ospreay’s potential switch to WWE. The Stamford-based promotion even made ‘preliminary overtures’ to secure the United Empire leader. However, it was not to be, and Triple H would feel like WWE has squandered a huge opportunity.
When did Will Ospreay last compete in AEW?
Back in August, Will Ospreay faced Chris Jericho at the Wembley Stadium at ALL IN pay-per-view. In a clash that was dubbed a dream showdown by wrestling pundits, The Aerial Assassin stood his ground. Wrestling in front of his own people gave Ospreay the much-needed impetus against a fancied veteran in Y2J.
After a grueling contest that went to the wire, the Billy G.O.AT. emerged victorious. He planted Jericho with The Ocho and pinned the former AEW Champion after the latter survived the first one.
Overall, it was a night Will Ospreay will never forget in his career. Given that he’s now signed a multi-year contract with AEW, he can test the waters with names like MJF, Adam Copeland, Bryan Danielson, and so many more.
