After $44 million star’s brutal injury, Dwight Howard knocks OKC’s doors offering replacement
Former NBA Champion Dwight Howard hinted at the possibility of a comeback to the NBA following the devastating injury to OKC's Chet Holmgren.
Dwight Howard appeals to OKC to join team
Former 3x DPOY Dwight Howard has been on the lookout to make a comeback to the NBA for quite some time. Howard last played in the NBA during the 2021-22 season for the Los Angeles Lakers before pursuing professional basketball in Taiwan. However, after a devastating injury to Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren, the doors on an NBA comeback might have opened up for Howard.
Dwight Howard was one of the most sought after defensive big men in the NBA during his prime years. On a recent episode of the KG Certified podcast with Kevin Garnett, Howard discussed the current situation of the OKC roster.
The Thunder sit near the top of the Western Conference but have been taken aback by a string of injuries to their starting centers. Upon hearing the news, Howard jumped at the opportunity.

The Thunder are facing a crisis of depth in their big man rotation at the moment. Free agent signing Isaiah Hartenstein has been dealing with a wrist injury which has kept him out of action to start the season. As Chet Holmgren suffered a devastating injury, the Thunder have been left bare at the big man front. That’s where Dwight Howard’s case comes in.
The former champion with the Lakers believes he can still play solid minutes as a backup big man in the NBA. At 38-years of age, the big man would be amongst the oldest players in the league if the Thunder were to sign him. Dwight Howard also pointed out the existing chemistry between him and Thunder guard Alex Caruso, who won a championship alongside Howard on the 2020 Lakers.
Dwight Howard hints at team-up with LeBron James, JJ Redick
LeBron James recently floated the idea of him playing college basketball. James was one of the standout stars of the early 2000s who headed straight to the NBA after high school.
Having missed out on his college experience, James recently posted about a dream he had about playing at Duke alongside HC JJ Redick. Dwight Howard jumped at James’ tweet, hinting at a team-up between the trio.

While that dream may not end up coming true, Dwight Howard would know about playing next to LeBron James and JJ Redick better than anyone else. Howard, of course, spent a couple of seasons playing alongside James on the Lakers, even winning a championship with the team.
As for Redick, the current Lakers HC played for several seasons alongside Howard on the Orlando Magic.
