At the upcoming Dana White Contender Series event, Torrez Finney will have a remarkable opportunity to compete in the UFC again. This opportunity comes after being turned down on two previous occasions by UFC CEO Dana White. Finney will face off against Abdellah Er-Ramy at DWCS 74, which is scheduled to take place on October 1.
Torrez Finney currently boasts an impressive record of 9-0. His most recent win came in the recently concluded DWCS event, where he defeated Cam Rowston via unanimous decision. The event had several intriguing moments that garnered everyone’s attention. However, Finney’s performance was not among those. As such, he couldn’t even impress Dana White.
My recommendation to you (Torrez Finney) was to go out and get some experience... You went out in one year and fought one fight. You know, I’m always brutally honest with this stuff. You would get absolutely decimated in the UFC with the performance you put on.Dana White via Dana White Contender Series post-fight show
The UFC CEO asked the 25-year-old to train harder as he performed worse than his last appearance. White also highlighted how Finney was struggling with stamina during the three-round fight. Per the UFC CEO, the undefeated prospects lack experience. Even after that brutal rejection. the 25-year-old somehow managed to bag another shot at the UFC contract.
Interestingly, the 25-year-old was not the first choice to fight against Er-Ramy. Initially, the Spanish fighter was scheduled to fight Logan Woods. Unfortunately, Woods had to pull out, and Finney got the opportunity again. However, after hearing White’s bold words against him, Finney was quite disappointed with the UFC CEO. As such, the 25-year-old went on to dismiss some of Dana White’s remarks about him.
Torrez Finney talks about his second rejection from Dana White and the UFC
Torrez Finney is quite a character inside and off the cage. His Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson gimmick remains often loved by the fight fans. Even his DWCS run is quite commendable, as he holds a two-fight win streak in the competition. Even after that exquisite streak, Finney has not yet managed to get ahold of a UFC contract.
After Finney’s second victory at Dana White’s favorite event, the UFC CEO assessed him honestly. Interestingly, the 25-year-old was quite unhappy after hearing the UFC CEO’s assessment of him. Finney, in particular, did not like White’s assertion that he didn’t try to gain more experience over the past year.
You know, I don't think a lot of people know this, but I was selected to be on The Ultimate Fighter this year. Whenever you sign The Ultimate Fighter contract, you are restricted from fighting during that time span. So during that time span in January, I couldn't fight for January, February, March.Torrez Finney via Sirius XM
In a tumultuous year for Finney, Dana White’s feedback seemed to contrast with the 25-year-old’s statement. Despite the setbacks, the resilient Finney has been given another chance to showcase his abilities. It’s now uncertain whether Finney will seize the moment and fulfill his potential.
