Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith led the Seahawks once again with an impressive overtime win against the New England Patriots this Sunday. The West Coast team defeated the Patriots by 23-20 to record a 2-0 start to the new season.

Since he started as the starting quarterback for the Seahawks in 2022, Smith has won 19 regular season games. Including Sunday’s win, nine of those games have been won with scoring drives in the overtime or fourth quarter.

The Florida native Smith was without key players against the New England Patriots. The Patriots started the season by holding Joe Burrow‘s Cincinnati Bengals to a win, thereby creating some major noise. The Seahawks were missing leading rusher Kenneth Walker III and right tackle George Fant, thus putting a lot of pressure on Geno Smith.

However, Smith responded in a stellar fashion. He completed 33 passes out of 44 for 327 yards and a touchdown. He led a drive at the end of regulation to tie the game and later led another in overtime to set up Jason Myers‘ game-winning field goal. On this occasion, Smith took time to acknowledge that he finds it rewarding to step up for the team when the team necessitates it.

Whenever I’m in this situation and the game is on the line, I’m so happy and just excited for those opportunities. I look forward to them actually. I know it’s going to happen more and more times throughout the season. The best quarterbacks always find ways to win. I want to be regarded in that light, so I just want to continue to be there for my team, do what’s right, make the plays when they come.

He made quite a statement with his play, trying to make truth to his commitment to become better than he ever was. HC Mike Macdonald said that he thought that Geno Smith played a “dynamite game” on Sunday. He also added that the game plan was intact during the match.

Macdonald joined the Seahawks in 2024, quickly rising to the ranks with his philosophy and tactics. He is the first Seahawks coach to win the first two games with the franchise as head coach.

Geno Smith is a step closer to an extension

The Seahawks were all out of chemistry in the game against the Patriots. The defense who braved the Denver Broncos in the first game looked weak and vulnerable. The wide receivers were no good as they kept on dropping balls and missing opportunities to score. Despite this, Geno Smith took on the mammoth task of leading the team all by himself.

The Patriots were able to figure out that Geno Smith would have to rush in to gain points. This makes Smith’s mastery more special. All of these points to the quarterback is trying to prove that he is an extension material. Since 2022, they have had a winning record with him under the center.

Furthermore, amid the game, he has also achieved a certain milestone. He passed Rick Mirer to become the fifth in-all-time leading passers for the Seahawks with 9,139 yards. Smith also overcame Mirer in the same game to record the fifth-highest completions in franchise history. Last week, he also recorded the longest rushing TD by a Seahawk player since the 1984 season.
