When Calais Cambell moved to South Beach in Florida and joined the Miami Dolphins in June, he never would have pictured himself handcuffed on the side of the highway. Campbell, who is into his 17th season in the NFL, went through several emotions, especially as the cops detained him.
On Sunday, before his official debut as the defensive tackle of the Miami Dolphins, Campbell saw his teammate and star wide receiver Tyreek Hill handcuffed, lying face first on the ground and surrounded by the police. The 38-year-old got out of his car and asked them about the situation.
Bodycam footage from one of the cops shows Campbell in the white t-shirt told to back off and then detained and eventually cuffed as Tyreek Hill’s muffled voice can be heard in the distance. Campbell wasn’t the only Dolphins player that came to aid Hill. Tight end Jonnu Smith pulled up next to the ruckus and called Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus to update him on the situation.

Calais Campbell revealed what happened when he tried to help Tyreek Hill
Despite detaining all three, the cops did not arrest anyone; instead, they were let go just in time for the kickoff. The Dolphins defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars, with Hill gaining 130 receiving yards with 1 touchdown and Smith with 1 catch for 7 yards.
Even though the Dolphins won, both Hill and head coach Mike McDaniel expressed their disappointment. Safety Jevon Holland called it cruelty to the Black community and demanded strict and swift action. Campbell later spoke with ESPN sports analyst Stephen A. Smith and retold what went down after he exited his car to help Tyreek.
They were trying to yank him down to the ground. I saw them kick him, pull him down, [and] put on the cuffs… One officer was pushing on his head. Completely unnecessary.Calais Campbell told Stephen A. Smith (H/T: Daily Mail)
According to Campbell, the officers told him Hill was detained for careless driving and a seatbelt violation. They had to use handcuffs because he disobeyed a direct order. The 6x Pro Bowler recalled it was only one officer who showed the aggression, and the rest were doing their job by the book.
Campbell tried to mediate by saying he was Hill’s friend, but the cops ignored him and cuffed him as well. Stephen A. delivered a fiery response after hearing the detailed story.
This is what we're talking about when we talk about the ease with which dehumanization kicks in when it comes to Black men.Stephen A. Smith said

Hill’s agent Rosenhaus hinted that his client has the option of taking legal help if the Miami Dade police fail to sort out the mess their officers have created. The Miami Dolphins sent out an official statement on X (formerly Twitter).
It is both maddening and heartbreaking to watch the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary force and hostility towards these players.Miami Dolphins statement read

South Florida Police Benevolent Association president Steadman Stahl, in a statement, said that Tyreek Hill was detained,
For officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great risk of danger. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs.Steadman Stahl said
However, the statement had no mention of either Calais Campbell or Jonnu Smith and why they were cuffed with Hill. In another statement, the Miami Police revealed the officers involved were sent to administrative duty.
