The 250th episode of Dynamite featured MJF challenging Will Ospreay for the AEW International Championship. The two wrestlers put on one of the best matches of the year. However, one spot during the match left fans frustrated. The Aerial Assassin borrowed a move from AJ Styles and performed the Styles Clash on his opponent from the top rope.
Styles addressed the issue of Will Ospreay performing his move on his X account after receiving multiple messages and tweets from fans. He questioned the wrestling world about why they thought that someone else using his move bothered him. Wrestlers borrowing moves from one another is nothing new. Although this is sometimes done with the blessing of the person who popularized it, it can sometimes take a sour turn.
For example, Kevin Owens has integrated the Stunner into his arsenal. However, he did consult ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin before using it. The two even had a WrestleMania match later on. On the other hand, Sgt. Slaughter expressed severe disappointment and frustration when Lacey Evans started using the Cobra Clutch. Styles claimed that borrowing moves from others actually showed appreciation.
Most fans were upset not because the move was used but because it was heavily undermined. A regular Styles Clash is considered one of the most devastating moves in professional wrestling. If the person taking the move does not do so correctly, it can break their neck.
Furthermore, the AEW match even featured MJF taking the move from the top rope, with minimal damage done to him. The Salt of the Earth was able to recover, and eventually beat Ospreay to become the new AEW International Champion.
AJ Styles wants to bring more wrestlers from Pro Wrestling NOAH to WWE
AJ Styles recently took on Naomichi Marufuji in a match on Pro Wrestling NOAH’s Destination. He scored a hard-earned victory over the Japanese superstar with a Styles Clash in a match that lasted for nearly half an hour. The Phenomenal One had a wonderful time during his return to Japanese wrestling and would like to see the partnership between the two companies continue in the future.
In an interview with Yahoo Japan, Styles noted that this new partnership simply marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between the two promotions. He believed that some changes were needed in the model. However, these cross-promotional initiatives would tremendously benefit superstars and companies alike.
The former WWE Champion wanted to see wrestlers from NOAH come to WWE and vice versa. This would allow superstars from the Stamford-based promotion to learn about Japanese pro wrestling. Furthermore, the wrestlers on the other side of the ocean would get to perform on a bigger stage.
