This week’s main event on SmackDown was all about AJ Styles. The Phenomenal One promised the WWE Universe that he would address his future, and the whole show built up towards a possible retirement announcement by the superstar. However, it was nothing but a hoax. The former WWE Champion deceived everyone, including Cody Rhodes, before he laid a vicious attack on him.
In the closing moments of the show, Cody Rhodes was paying his respect by celebrating the career of Phenomenal One. It looked like a possible retirement. However, the 46-year-old star attacked Rhodes and went on to smash Rhodes into the steel steps, delivering a Styles Clash from the top of the steps.
Thereafter, the former Intercontinental Champion not only confirmed that he wasn’t retiring but also coming after The American Nightmare. Most notably, the segment reminded a lot of fans about the similar turn of events that took place in 2013. Ahead of that year’s Money In The Bank, Mark Henry delivered an emotional retirement speech before he went on to absolutely destroy the WWE Champion, John Cena.
Styles has made his intentions clear: he wants a rematch for the Undisputed WWE Championship. With Clash at the Castle all set to be the next PLE, it is highly likely that the two stars might collide at the event. It is going to be interesting to see how the American Nightmare is going to react to this situation in the weeks to come from here on.
