In Short
  • Bam Adebayo scored a career-high 83 points, surpassing Kobe Bryant's previous record of 81 points in a single game.
  • The Miami Heat defeated the Washington Wizards 150-129, extending their winning streak to six games.
  • A’ja Wilson humorously acknowledged Adebayo's achievement, noting it surpassed her own career high of 53 points.

If the NBA world had to guess one player to surpass Kobe Bryant‘s points record of 81 points, it is very likely that no one would have named Bam Adebayo. On Tuesday night, the Miami Heat took on a struggling Washington Wizards at the Kaseya Center. Little did anyone know that history was going to be made.

The Heat registered a convincing 150-129 victory over the Wizards and extended their winning streak to six games. The win helped them leapfrog the Orlando Magic as they find themselves at sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 35-28 record. Meanwhile, the Wizards have now lost nine games in a row and sit at 14th place in the standings.

Currently in his ninth season in the NBA, Bam Adebayo was never known for his scoring prowess, as he has breached the 20 points per game average just once in his career. Picked as the 14th overall pick by the Heat, he has made it to two NBA Finals, selected as an All-Star three times, and was selected in the NBA All-Defensive First team in 2024.

However, on Tuesday night, the Heat were without their top scorer, Tyler Herro; hence, it was on Adebayo to take up the scoring burden. The Heat center stunned the NBA world and recorded a career-high 83 points to go along with nine rebounds. He scored 31 points in the opening quarter, breaking the Heat record for points in any quarter. He finished the half with 43 points, a team record for any half.

Adebayo’s partner and WNBA star A’ja Wilson is widely considered one of the greatest WNBA players of all time. Wilson became the only player in the WNBA or NBA to ever win the championship, scoring title, MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and Finals MVP in the same season. She has won three WNBA championships and is a huge fan favorite among WNBA fans.

While Adebayo may not boast the same accolades as Wilson, he did break their household career-high in points, as Wilson’s highest-scoring game is 53 points. She made it known on Threads after the 28-year-old’s historic performance. She wrote:

Welp won’t have the highest career high in the house anymore but at least it gives me something to go after.

A player with a career scoring average of 16.1 per game and whose previous season-high was 32, it’s frankly mind-blowing. A few days ago, Heat legend Dwyane Wade revealed that his former team lacked the energy to compete, which seemed to be a shot at Adebayo and some of the team’s veterans. But it looks like it lit a spark in the center in a positive way.

Bam Adebayo breaks Kobe Bryant’s points record

Bam Adebayo broke several club records against the Wizards, but the biggest of them all is surpassing the great Kobe Bryant’s record of 81 points to become the second-highest scorer in a game in NBA history. He trails only Wilt Chamberlain‘s record of 100 points.

It was a beautiful moment for the Heat star as he achieved it in front of Wilson and his mother, who were sitting courtside.

Adebayo is now number one on the Heat franchise single-game scoring list, besting LeBron James‘ previous record of 61 before the third quarter was even over. He is the 11th player in history to cross the 70-point mark and the third to cross the 80-point mark.

While he made a career-high seven threes on Tuesday, he shot a record 36 out of 43 free throws. The 36 free throws made were also an NBA record, breaking the previous mark of 28 held by Chamberlain and Adrian Dantley

It was a historic night for Bam Adebayo and the Heat organization. Heat Nation will be hoping to see more of Adebayo’s scoring prowess as the postseason approaches.

Bam Adebayo responds to Dwyane Wade’s “no buzz in Miami” comments

Dwyane Wade was critical of the Heat’s performances this season and took a shot at the veterans for creating no buzz in the city of Miami. But after a performance like that and extending the team’s winning streak to six games, there is sure to be a lot of buzz in the city

Adebayo responded to Wade’s comments in his post-match press conference.

First of all this man talking about no buzz and he wants to be out. He 45. Take your a** to the house! Idk what he’s tryna to do, rile us up, he gotta understand we went through COVID, this a different time. All that said, a lot of buzz tonight, not only here, but in the association.

Adebayo and the Heat will be looking to continue their hot streak as they are scheduled to take on a struggling Milwaukee Bucks at the Kaseya Center on March 12.
