A'ja Wilson points out race and white privilege concerns after Caitlin Clark's big achievement
The WNBA has been the center for conversations surrounding race and privilege for many seasons, but the arrival of Caitlin Clark ignited the discourse surrounding the league once again. Las Vegas Aces star, A’ja Wilson, who has established herself as one of the league’s most decorated players, didn’t hold back while addressing the stark contrasts in how Black and white athletes are spotlighted in the sport.
The debate gained traction following Caitlin Clark’s extraordinary rookie season with the Indiana Fever. Clark, a highly celebrated first-overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft, has been the centerpiece of increased media attention and record-breaking viewership. However, the rising star’s prominence also amplified questions about equity in the WNBA’s marketing strategies.
“It doesn’t matter what we all do as Black women; we’re still going to be swept underneath the rug. That’s why it boils my blood when people say it’s not about race—because it is.
A’ja Wilson told in May 2024 to AP
A’ja Wilson’s frustration is an apt depiction of a long-standing issue across sports – the disparities in recognition between athletes of different races. While Clark’s talent is undeniable, her ascension as the face of the league brought to light the pattern of black athletes like Wilson, who are equally if not more accomplished, often being overshadowed despite their on and off-court contributions.
Caitlin Clark, for her part, has been adamant about not weaponizing her fame as a means of becoming the face of the league, and instead cashing in on her talents to showcase why she is one of the best players in the WNBA after just her rookie year. Her recent recognition as TIME Magazine’s Athlete of the Year only went to show how mainstream media has taken to Clark like fish to water.
Sheryl Swoopes cracks down on Caitlin Clark once again
The debate intensified further when WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes weighed in on the conversation after Caitlin Clark was named Time Magazine’s Athlete of the Year, the first WNBA player to earn this distinction. While Swoopes acknowledged Clark’s achievements, she also raised questions about the criteria for such accolades and whether other deserving candidates were overlooked.
I don’t think I’m surprised. But the fact that that’s the very first WNBA player to ever win TIME Magazine Athlete of the Year is pretty special… Is it based off of her performance on the court? Or is it more about the impact that she had on the game this season?
Sheryl Swoopes said on Gil’s Arena
Swoopes went on to mention A’ja Wilson, who had another stellar season as a two-time champion and reigning MVP, as a player equally deserving of recognition. Of course, Swoopes’ comments certainly must be taken with a pinch of salt, as the WNBA legend has not tried to hide her high-handed criticism of Caitlin Clark in the past.
