When A’ja Wilson ended her 3rd MVP-winning season, she was on top of the world as the best women’s basketball player in the world. Had she won another WNBA championship, it would have cemented her legacy.

But it was not to be as the Las Vegas Aces faced the indomitable New York Liberty in the 2nd round of the playoffs, and could not keep up with their all-round game.

This season, the franchise chose to rectify the roster mistakes from last season and brought in 5 new players with the hopes that the reset would help them towards their goal.

At the All-Star break, A’ja Wilson and her team were .500 and an outside bet at winning the championship. Fast-forward a month, and they are being touted as a team that can win it all.

The team is top 5 in offense and defense in this stretch and has won 7 games in a row. Earlier, they faced the third-place Atlanta Dream, who were on a winning streak of their own.

This meant the Aces had to pull out all the stops on both offense and defense if they were to try and win. They did exactly that in the lowest scoring game of the night and ended up winning 74-72.

The team collectively played well on defense, but it was A’ja Wilson’s game-leading 5 blocks that paved the way. Along with that stellar defensive performance, she also scored 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Those numbers scream another dominating performance.

A’ja Wilson sets another record after masterful performance

A’ja Wilson has been on a tear lately and has rightfully entered her name in the MVP race. This masterful performance against the Atlanta Dream brought another record to her name.

Before this game, Dream center Brittney Griner and Wilson’s former teammate Candace Parker were the only players with a stat line of 30+ points, 10+ rebounds, and 5+ blocks.

Parker and Wilson were tied with 2 such games, whereas Griner posted one in her career. This game was the 3rd time the Aces’ superstar recorded such numbers, which makes her the lone player with 3 such performances.

The recently turned 29-year-old continues to prove that there is no one better in women’s basketball. If she continues to perform in this manner, teams vying for a championship will be looking over their shoulders.

Lynx humiliation led to Aces’ mid-season resurgence

Before stepping into the month of August, the Las Vegas Aces were mired in inconsistency. They struggled to get their balance right as they juggled lineups and tried to figure out their best game plan.

Then came the 53-point humiliation at the hands of the league-leading Minnesota Lynx on August 2nd. After that game, head coach Becky Hammon challenged the players to fix their season.

The result of that has seen an uptick in performance from the very next game. Offseason acquisition Jewell Loyd is averaging 5 more points ever since she started coming off the bench, all in 5 fewer minutes.

The changes have seen the Aces exploit opponents’ lineup choices. 7 of these past 8 wins have come against teams in playoff positions. Out of the remaining 8 games, A’ja Wilson and the Aces can realistically win all of them.

They have 3 against the lowly Chicago Sky, 1 against the rebuilding Washington Mystics, and 2 against the Phoenix Mercury and the Dream, both of whom they have just beaten. Then they have a rematch against the Lynx on September 4th. That game will give a clear indication about the Las Vegas Aces’ championship credentials.
