MS Dhoni is regarded as one of the greatest captains the sport has seen. In his ten-year stint as Indian captain, he won all ICC trophies available to him, won India the Test mace and has captained the most international matches. Along with that, he has won five IPL titles with his team, Chennai Super Kings and two Champions Trophy Twenty20 titles.
Ajit Agarkar, the current Indian team selector, appeared on the “SportifywithPRG” podcast, where they talked cricket. In the podcast, Agarkar claimed MS Dhoni cannot be replaced or replicated by artificial intelligence.
He spoke about how far AI and data science has come, but explained that the two couldn’t work practically as the sport needed a human touch. Agarkar further added that despite all the data, they still needed to watch the player to select them.
He believes that a team still needed a “man to run the show,” explaining that AI would not be able to do a captain’s job. The selector further explained his views taking the example of MS Dhoni.
He knew what was happening, and how the game was changing. It’s the same with international trade. You’ve got the feel for the game. You’ve got the instinct that, oh, you know, certain batsman, maybe we’ve spoken that he does a x or a y thing at this stage in a game, but maybe he’s trying to do something different and what do I do?Ajit Agarkar said
Ajit Agarkar talks about Virat Kohli’s legacy in the game
In the past few weeks, there have been rumors of Ajit Agarkar and the BCCI wanting to drop Virat Kohli from the T20I World Cup squad. The BCCI had instructed the selectors to convince Virat Kohli to step down, but they failed as well. Despite these attempts to drop him, Agarkar spoke about the legacy the 35-year-old has left in the game.
He is one of those guys who has set a benchmark. 10-15 years into his career, he has only gotten fitter. And you can see the results. If someone like him sets an example, puts forward certain things than you need, certain fitness levels you need, gradually it has progressed.Ajit Agarkar said
He spoke about the contribution the BCCI has put into the youth teams of India as well. Agar pointed out that with the increasing facilities, the standard of fitness has improved.
