Ajit Agarkar front-runner among 10 other candidates to become chairman of selectors

In order to fill three vacancies that have arisen in the senior selection committee, a virtual interview will be held on Thursday by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) headed by Madan Lal. Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar is understood to be in pole position to get the selector’s post from the West Zone. Further, he might become the next chairman of the panel.
The new Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) constitution says that the candidate who has the most Test caps among all selectors will be voted the chairman of selectors. The current chairman is Sunil Joshi who has represented India in 15 Tests. Agarkar on the other hand, has 26 Test caps.
There are 10 other candidates who have also applied – Harvinder Singh, Abey Kuruvilla, Nayan Mongia, Chetan Sharma, Maninder Singh, Vijay Dahiya, Ajay Ratra, Nikhil Chopra, Shiv Sunder Das, Debashish Mohanty and Ranadeb Bose.
BCCI’s AGM to be held today
The 89th Annual General Meeting of the BCCI will be held today and if reports are anything to go by, President Sourav Ganguly could face an ‘ambush’ of questions from members especially over his endorsements of brands that are understood to be rivals to the BCCI’s official sponsors. A source close to Ganguly reportedly said according to Hindustan Times, “If anyone raises the issue in the meeting, Ganguly has a line of defence ready.”
Apart from the aforesaid issue and the selection to the vacant posts, there are other important issues to be discussed. These include the appointment of the BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla, the continuation of Brijesh Patel as chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and also the issue of whether or not to admit two new teams in the IPL from either 2021 or 2022.
