At a time when the world is watching the events taking place between Israel and Gaza, basketball fans are torn between supporting either. While some try to stay neutral, including Israeli players Deni Avdija and others playing in the league, Al Horford‘s sister, Anna Horford, does not stay quiet.
She has been tweeting about the sufferings the people of Palestine are facing at the hands of Israel. The sister of the 2024 NBA champion has been vocal about the US government’s lack of support towards humanity, as it rather focuses on helping its Israeli counterparts.
In the midst of this, Israeli media house YNet asked Portland Trail Blazers star Deni Avdija if he was aware that Americans do not completely understand what is happening to their country. He replied:
Not everyone understands 100% what is happening in Israel. We’re a very small country, and there are people who live in bubbles in their countries. Many are interested, and I always explain the whole situation properly, from the right and good side. I try to show reality as much as possible.
Deni Avdija said
The Wizards star aims to educate Americans on what Israelis are facing. Being a reply to a publication back home, his answer was true to what is expected of a staunch patriot.

However, the notion of Israeli aggression towards the people of Palestine has been well documented. Nowadays, the protests across the world are growing louder, and governments are trying to best to keep the peace in their own nations.
Anna Horford and fans slam Deni Avdija’s interest in educating Americans about Israel
The problem for Dani Avdija is that a lot of fans did not appreciate what he wants to do. If they could turn on NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal for entertaining Israeli children and teenagers, the Wizards star was not going to be left out.
Anna Horford and basketball fans reacted strongly to the Israeli’s opinions. They believe he and his government are committing atrocities against the Palestinians while trying to project to the outer world that they are the ones who are suffering.
Horford and fans took turns reminding Avdija that his country is the one committing all the crimes and then crying wolf. Check out examples of those social media comments below:
This is like a Nazi trying to justify the Holocaust… You can’t “both sides” what Isr*el is doing. Isr*eli denial & lack of accountability will be studied for decades to come. The NBA is made worse by his presence. https://t.co/odwUpXv04s

Deni Avdija might have been trying to stay patriotic, however, at these times, it is difficult for him or any Israeli to talk about their problems. Not when their government is trying to bring the hammer down on Palestinians.
Deni Avdija to represent Israel in EuroBasket
Leaving politics aside, Deni Avdija is currently the best player on both the Portland Trail Blazers as well as the Israeli men’s national basketball team. The latter is about to participate in the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket tournament.

There, he and his teammates will be drawn in Group D, alongside France and Slovenia. The latter will feature Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic, who will be determined to lead his team to the next round.
This could pose a problem for the Israelis, who will look to prove that they belong among the best basketball nations in Europe. Even if they do not top the group, finishing in 3rd or 4th will be crucial to their chances of battling in the round of 16.
The FIBA EuroBasket is set to tip off on August 27th and will feature a host of top basketball nations. With the likes of Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and several other prominent NBA stars, the tournament will be an exciting affair.
