Back in January, a lawsuit filed against Vince McMahon sent shockwaves around the wrestling world. Janel Grant, a former WWE employee, accused McMahon of s*xual trafficking and abuse. Since then, several wrestlers and legends of the industry have weighed their opinions on the heinous allegations. Recently, Alberto El Patron, previously known as Alberto Del Rio in WWE, spoke in detail about the lawsuit.
During an interview with Sportskeeda WrestleBinge, Del Rio explicitly defended his former boss. The former WWE Champion claimed it was ‘unfair’ that the wrestling world has constantly tarnished McMahon’s name since the allegations came to light. Further, the 47-year-old heaped praise on the billionaire’s contribution to the wrestling business. According to Del Rio, the industry wouldn’t be where it is today without McMahon.
The personal stuff has to be completely separated from what he created in our industry. That’s the only thing I find unfair.Alberto Del Rio via WrestleBinge
Unsurprisingly, this isn’t the first time that a wrestler has openly supported McMahon. Months ago, John Cena revealed that he would wait for the final verdict before turning on the man who catapulted his career. Meanwhile, WWE Hall of Famers such as Mick Foley and Mark Henry have also defended the former chairman.
The lawsuit was put on hold after a federal investigation was launched into Vince McMahon and WWE, who are co-defendants in the lawsuit. A docuseries on the founder of the company will release next week on September 25. As per reports, the series will shed more light on the trafficking allegations against McMahon. Moreover, several legends and journalists are set to opine on the 79-year-old and his impact on the business.
Wrestling fans criticize Alberto Del Rio for his comments on Vince McMahon amid ongoing trafficking lawsuit
As expected, the online wrestling fraternity wasn’t thrilled with Alberto Del Rio defending Vince McMahon. Many took to X to voice their displeasure at the former WWE Champion’s comments. Some fans weren’t surprised by his support of the former chairman.
Given Del Rio’s notorious past, users described the duo as two peas in a pod. Fans pointed out how the 47-year-old had been arrested for domestic violence multiple times before. Hence insinuating he was in no position to speak about the trafficking lawsuit. Here are some of the reactions from fans online:
A few users agreed with Del Rio, stating that they would wait until the final verdict. Furthermore, others added that statements like this are why wrestling companies no longer want anything to do with Del Rio.
