“Albon is just like Couthard,” Alex Albon “too nice” to make it big in F1

Helmut Marko the Red Bull team adviser has recently given his thoughts on the F1 career that former driver Alex Albon has had so far and the 79-year-old believes that he is just not ruthless enough and that is where he still has a bit of work to do.

The British-Thai driver first stepped into F1 in 2019 for Toro Rosso and after just six months was promoted to the senior team to partner up with Max Verstappen. However, just like Pierre Gasly, he was also not able to make a solid claim for the second seat at Red Bull.

Albon was dropped from the Red Bull team after the end of the 2020 Formula One season but unlike Pierre Gasly, he did not have a seat for the 2021 season. The 26-year-old sat out the whole season and had to make do with a Red Bull reserve driver role.

His spell with Red Bull was short but he did have his moments where if luck had been with him he could have done better as a driver for the Milton-Keynes-based team.

Lewis Hamilton didn’t destroy his career, but he did put a dampener on it. He was in second place in Brazil in 2019 when Hamilton drove him off the track. Then Alex wanted to pass Hamilton on the outside at the Red Bull Ring in 2020 but got pushed into the gravel.”

Marko feels the young driver could have had his glory moments with Red Bull had things gone in his favor during critical moments of his Red Bull career.

After sitting a season out, Alex Albon is back in F1 and is currently doing his trade for the Williams team. Moreover, Albon has managed to score three points in a car that is not even at the level of the mid-field teams.

Marko while talking about Albon at Williams and has said, “Alex is very fast, but I wonder if he’s too nice. He’s a bit like David Coulthard, who everyone likes, but wasn’t tough enough in the end,”

After looking at what Helmut Marko has said about Alex Albon, it seems the 26-year-old has all the credentials to do big things in F1 it’s just that he needs to toughen up a bit to secure a good future in the sport.
