Alejandro Davidovich Fokina earned a very decisive victory against World No.6 Jack Draper to reach the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters. The Spaniard had entered the match as less favorite to win as Draper was in better form than him. But he eventually proved that it was on the red dirt he began his career.
Fokina began the match with so much composure, hitting the ball with so much precision that Draper always had to reach the ball late. The Spaniard didn’t waste time to claim the first-set win. However, in the second set, Draper adjusted his game and went for power and pace. The British No.1 showed some of his brilliant displays that led him to win the Indian Wells in March.
He broke back at Fokina, before saving a match point at 6-5 in the tiebreak and claimed it for himself. The third set followed with a big response from Davidovich Fokina, he found his rhythm early and kept hitting with precision. Draper responded with good serves but couldn’t keep his opponent from running away with the 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4 victory.
After a half embrace from the duo in the net, Davidovich Fokina was seen in tears. The Spaniard was the more experienced player on the court and was the 2022 runners-up in the competition. He began his career playing on clay in Spain, so felt pressured after losing the second set against Draper.
Meanwhile, Draper was nowhere at the level he showed on the hard court. In fact, clay has been his most difficult surface. He has only earned 10 wins on clay throughout his career and made 46 unforced errors, recorded 10 costly double faults against Davidovich Fokina. He poorly converted four of his 16 break opportunities, which, if he had done better, would beaten the Spaniard.

While Fokina matches on into the quarter-finals, Draper must have to examine himself. The British star has shown his unique talent on hard and grass court but has yet to do the same on clay. He has opted to not play in any ATP 500 events after the Monte Carlo, which gives him ample time to train hard and get used to the surface before the Madrid Open.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is not pleased with his performance despite a win against Jack Draper
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s performance wasn’t his best. The Spaniard played better against Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the second round of the Monte Carlo, dominating the match from start to finish and winning in straight sets. Despite beating Jack Draper in the Round of 16, he was disappointed by his performance.

Today I didn’t feel my best tennis and not my best mental strategy. Today was a rollercoaster with my mind. I thought I was playing better but my mind was saying to me a lot of b******t. I don’t know how to control my emotions today, it was very emotional today to play here. I’m so sorry how I did it today but I’m happy for the win and I’m going to try and improve for tomorrow.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina said during his on-court interview
Davidovich Fokina is seeking his first title this season. The World No.42 has a big chance of reaching the semi-finals as he faces Alexei Popyrin in the quarter-finals. His opponent has not much experience on clay, as his strength has always been on hard court.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina aiming for his first title of the season in Monte Carlo
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina must be in desperate need of a title this season. The Spaniard has had an up-and-down season, reaching the finals of the ATP 500 events in Acapulco and Dallas. But failed to win any of them despite playing well. He also reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in January.
At the Monte Carlo Masters, he has flourished. He reached the semi-finals of the ATP 1000 tournament after beating Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2. The Spaniard will now face Carlos Alcaraz, after the 21-year-old beat Arthur Fils.
