After enduring a difficult season in 2023, Toronto Blue Jays’ pitcher Alek Manoah hoped to make a strong bounce back as he returned to the pitching mound for his first start of the year. Unfortunately for him, things once again did not work out as he had planned.
The pitcher, whose previous season ended with a right arm injury, had a tough time against the Washington Nationals on Sunday. In his four innings, Manoah gave up seven runs (six earned) through six hits. He though did pick up six strikeouts.
After picking up the loss in this game, Manoah claimed that he was no Greg Maddux and claimed he needs a mental adjustment rather than a physical one.
I don’t think it’s a control thing. It was just me trying to be on the outside corner, trying to be too fine. It’s about understanding I’m not Greg Maddux. I’m not going to be Greg Maddux. My fastball has great life. I’ve just got to go out there and trust it.Alek Manoah said as Keegan Matheson of MLB.com
Things have been on the decline for the 26-year-old pitcher since his verbal altercation with New York Yankees ace, Gerrit Cole. He would call out Cole as the “worst cheater” in MLB. This all happened after tempers failed up in a Yankees-Blue Jays game when Manoah accidentally drilled Aaron Judge.
Despite struggling in his first start, Alek Manoah is expected to be part of the pitching rotation going forward. This could see him make his second appearance on May 12th against the Minnesota Twins.
