Alex Bregman has officially opted out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox. After several speculations regarding his future, the 3rd baseman on Monday officially exercised his opt-out clause and became a free agent again. Fans on social media would troll the AL East side for this.
Bregman was one of the biggest names in the offseason last year. The third baseman turned down a massive 6-year $156 million contract deal from the Houston Astros. As per reports, he and his agent, Scott Boras, were looking for a deal in the region of $200 million.
In the end, Bregman ended up joining the Red Sox. The 3-time MLB All-Star agreed on a 3-year, $120 million deal with the team. This deal would have seen him earn around $40 million per year. His contract did have the opt-out clause which he could have used after the 2025 and the 2026 season.
After just 8 months with the team, the 31-year-old has used this clause and will opt out after just one season. By doing so, Bregman leaves with 2 years and $80 million remaining on his contract.

This development also comes after Bregman’s arrival caused a massive stir in the Red Sox clubhouse. When he joined the team, Rafael Devers was the third baseman of the team.
The Dominican Republic International would refuse to yield his 3rd base position, leading to some tensions in the locker room. In the end, manager Alex Cora gave the nod to Bregman for the 3rd base spot and made Devers the designated hitter (DH) of the team.
Statistically, Bregman had been a better 3rd baseman than Devers in previous season. The former Astros star would earn a Gold Glove for this position.
The team would eventually value the presence and experience of Bregman and move on from Devers. They would shockingly trade away Devers to the San Francisco Giants, 2 years after giving him a massive 10-year, $313.5 million contract.
The Red Sox will likely try their best to retain, especially after trading away Devers. However, there is a chance that could be left empty-handed.
Social media reacts to Alex Bregman opting out of his 3-year deal with Red Sox
Alex Bregman will officially become a free agent once again this year. After one year with the Boston Red Sox, the veteran opted out of his deal and will test the free agency market this offseason.

Fans on social media would troll the Red Sox following this development. While some made jokes about them, there were some who attacked Bregman for his choice as well. One user wrote, “No one wants to play for Boston” while taking a swipe at the Red Sox.
Check out that and some other reactions regarding this development below:

All that, trading Devers cause ya brought in Bregman to play 3rd, and he opts out after 1 year 😂

I’d be so pissed if I were a Boston fan. They lost Devers because of all the drama with him wanting to be the third baseman and they get Bregman and he’s gone the first chance he gets.

Alex Bergman is going to wind up losing money because no team is going to give more than the $80 million for two years that Boston was going to give him. He’ll regret opting out. Sometimes greediness gets you less.

No one cares Red Sox aren't a serious organization.

Glad he gave glowing comments about playing in Boston and with the young core of players. Guess $40 million a year wasn’t enough.

Sick of him!
Thank god we signed him so we could get 3 extra playoff games and trade the franchise player away for nothing! Thank you Bregman! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

If Bregman does not re-sign with the Red Sox, there are plenty of other suitors available as well. One team that has been highly linked with him is the Detroit Tigers. The AL Central team did make a $171.5 million offer for him last winter.
Red Sox CEO claims Alex Bregman’s impact and influence had rubbed off on his teammates
Alex Bregman’s first (and probably only) season with the Boston Red Sox ended up in a Wild Card Series defeat. Following their elimination by the hands of arch-rivals, the New York Yankees, it was reported that Bregman could opt out of his deal. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Craig Breslow would later speak highly about the 2-time World Series winner.

While addressing the media, Breslow claimed that Bregman’s impact and influence had rubbed off on the team.
Obviously, Alex has the right, as structured in his contract, to opt out and he’s going to do what’s best for his family… Every conversation we’ve had, I learned something. I think that impact and influence has rubbed off on his teammates, and by all accounts, he’s loved his time in Boston, as well. We’ll let that play out.

Bregman was one of the top performers of the team despite missing almost 2 months due to injury. He finished the regular season with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs while having a slash line of .273/.360/.462 in 114 games.
