“Massive overpay” – Fans react as 2x All-Star Alex Bregman signs 3-year $120 million deal with Red Sox
Alex Bregman has agreed to join the Boston Red Sox on a 3-year $120,000,000 deal which includes an opt-out clause after the 2025 season.

The Alex Bregman free agency saga has come to an end. The 2-time MLB All-Star penned down a 3-year $120 million deal with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, becoming one of the highest paid players in the league.
The third baseman had been looking for a new team after becoming a free agent this offseason. He turned down a 6-year $156 million deal to re-sign with the Houston Astros. He and his agent Scott Boras were reported to be seeking a deal of around $200 million.
His deal with the Red Sox will see him earn $40 million per year. As per reports from MLB.com, Bregman does have an opt-out clause for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. His contract also includes some deferred money.
Alex Bregman also had huge offers from the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago Cubs. While the Tigers put up a 6-year $171.5 million offer, the Cubs gave him a 4-year $120 million deal.
The important thing here though is that both deals did not have an opt-out clause for 2025. The Tigers’ offer had an opt-out clause after 2026, whereas the Cubs had an opt-out clause after 2026 and 2027.
As a result of this, he turned down both of these deals. In the end, he picked up a deal with a higher annual average and fewer years than those two offers.

Social media reacts to Alex Bregman joining the Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox fans have been urging the team to land a top-bat from the free agency. They finally got their wish as the team roped in 2-time World Series winner Alex Bregman on a 3-year $120 million deal.

While the Red Sox fans are happy, the other MLB fans trolled him. A few fans also pointed out the duration of this deal as Bregman and his camp had previously been exploring a contract of up to 5-6 years.
One user boldly claimed that he had done nothing since 2019 and wrote, “massive overpay” while reacting to this development.

Bregman has a good record at Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox. In 131 plate appearances in Boston as a visitor, he has hit 9 home runs and driven in 17 runs while having a slash line of .311/.458/.660.
Last week, the Red Sox were reported to be in conversations regarding a trade deal with 8-time All-Star Nolan Arenado. Given that they have landed Bregman now, it remains to be seen whether they will continue to pursue Arenado this offseason or wait a little longer.
