Iga Swiatek took a great risk after breezing past Rebecca Sramkova in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday (January 16). She declared that Sydney’s coffee shops are better than those in Melbourne and the response annoyed the crowd inside the Rod Laver Arena who started to boo her.
Before arriving in Melbourne, Swiatek was in Sydney for the United Cup where she represented Team Poland and led them to the final but they were defeated by Team USA. When, during her on-court interview, Swiatek was asked to compare coffee in Melbourne to those found in Sydney, the Pole chose the latter.

Local man Alex de Minaur, however, is of a different opinion. After breezing past Tristan Boyer in straight sets, the 8th seed chose not to irk the Melbourne crowd by not taking any side.

Alex: “I have to keep this Melbourne crowd on my side… there’s no better place for coffee… than Australia.” 😂

De Minaur, who has not reached the quarterfinals in Melbourne, has so far not faced many difficulties in the tournament. In the first round, he defeated Botic van de Zandschulp and is set to meet 31st seed Francisco Cerundolo in the third round.
Iga Swiatek praises third-round opponent Emma Raducanu
A third round at the Australian Open will feature a clash between two high-profile players. Iga Swiatek will be meeting 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu who defeated Amanda Anisimova to progress to the third round at Melbourne Park for the first time.
Raducanu, following her win, said she would be trying to play her best tennis to win against the 23-year-old. They will be squaring off against each other for the fourth time.
They met at the Stuttgart Open twice (in 2022 and 2024) and at the Indian Wells in 2023. Swiatek won all the matches in straight sets. The four-time French Open champion, however, was defeated in the third round at the 2024 Australian Open by Linda Noskova.
