Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin is on the verge of creating more history with his goal-scoring records. Following a hat trick in the team’s 5-2 triumph over the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday, “The Great Eight” is getting close to Jaromir Jagr‘s rare goal-scoring record.

Ovechkin opened the scoring in the first period through a power-play goal. This goal saw him score his first career goal against Ilya Samsonov, the 177th different goaltender Ovechkin has scored against in his time in the NHL.

Ovechkin followed that powerplay goal with two more goals in the game. A powerful shot in the second period made it 4-2 for the Capitals. He wrapped up his 31st career hat trick in the dying moments of the game through an empty netter to seal an emphatic 5-2 victory.

This season Ovechkin has been on the chase of the goal-scoring record of Wayne Gretzky. The Canadian international sits at the top of the goal-scoring charts with 894.

The Capitals captain is now on 866 goals in the NHL and trails Gretzky by just 28 goals. With the form he is currently in, many are expecting him to break that record this season.

The T-Mobile Arena brings back fond memories for the Washington Capitals. It was here in 2018 when they won their first Stanley Cup by beating the Golden Knights 4-3 in Game 5 to win the series 4-1.

While reflecting his thoughts regarding the game, Ovechkin commented on how everybody on the team blocked the shots and sacrificed their bodies for this win.

It was a pretty cool atmosphere, like always. I think we played hard. Everybody blocking the shots, everybody sacrificing their bodies, so yeah, we take it to move on.

Alex Ovechkin said in the post-game media greet

The Capitals have now won back-to-back games with a 5-2 scoreline. The two wins have propelled them to a 12-4-1 record for the season and third in the division standings.

As for the Vegas Golden Knights, this loss brought an end to their two-game winning run. Despite the loss, the 2023 Stanley Cup champions sit on top of the Pacific Division table with a 11-5-2 record.
