There is some positive update for the NHL fans. Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was spotted taking part in a training session as he skated on the ice for the first time, two weeks after suffering a leg injury against Utah Hockey Club.

The veteran forward was in fine form in that game and had scored two goals. In the third period, he would have a collision with Jake McBain, which left him down on the ice. Ovechkin exited the game after this blow and was seen limping toward the bench. He did try to return to the ice but his injury did not allow him that chance.

The team would later announce that Ovechkin had fractured his left fibula and would be out for the next 4 to 6 weeks. This injury came at a time when he was chasing the goal-scoring record of Wayne Gretzky.

Ovechkin’s two goals against the Utah HC took his career goals tally to 868. “The Great Eight” now trails the Gretzky by 27 goals for the most in NHL history. Many including Gretzky himself have backed the Russian international to break this record.

The chase for this record could resume soon. The 39-year-old recently took part in a light skating session as he tries to get back to full fitness. In a post shared on X, the veteran forward could be seen skating around in an empty training center with a stick in hand.

The Capitals game against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday will mark the seventh game he has missed this season since this injury. In his incredible 20-year career in the NHL, Ovie has only missed 59 games. 35 of them have been due to injury, which highlights his great physical health.

Washington Capitals react to Alex Ovechkin returning to skating

The Washington Capitals are having a good time so far in the 2024-25 season. The 2018 Stanley Cup champions have a 17-6-1 this season and have been 4-2 since their captain Alex Ovechkin got injured. His skating on the ice is seen as a positive sign by coach Spencer Carbery and the team.

Reacting to this development regarding Ovechkin, head coach Carbery claimed it was “nice” to see that. However, he did admit that there is no timeline for his return yet.

It was nice to see. Just the first step. No timeline updates or anything like that. This is just a step in the progression of him coming back

Spencer Carbery said as per NHL.com

Meanwhile, his teammate Pierre-Luc Dubois seemed stunned by this news. He would go on to call Ovechkin a “machine“.

I don’t think he’s real, to be honest. It’s been two weeks with a broken leg and he’s back on the ice. He’s a machine… It’s great to see him back on the ice. He was happy when he got off, all excited. We were all excited

Pierre-Luc Dubois said as per NHL.com

The Caps would look to extend their winning run to five games now when they face the Sharks on Tuesday. A win in this game will take them to the top of the Metropolitan Division ahead of the New Jersey Devils before they embark on a three-game road trip.
