Alex Pereira‘s UFC 313 outing didn’t go as the Brazilian superstar would have expected. He fought top light heavyweight contender Magomed Ankalaev and lost the bout via unanimous decision. Despite having a massive winning momentum behind him, Pereira lost his belt as well his top spot in the pound-for-pound rankings.

Last year Pereira defended his title thrice knocking out all his opponents in a dominant fashion. As a result, he found himself in the #3 position, right behind Jon Jones and Islam Makhachev. Ahead of the fight, UFC CEO Dana White warned about ‘Poatan’ potentially snatching Makhachev’s pound-for-pound number one status, however, the reality was different.

Going into the fight, Pereira was the fan favorite and he impressed everyone with his takedown defense. However, in the process he was inefficient in the striking department and failed to find his target. Magomed Ankalaev kept the pressure throughout the fight and ultimately pulled off a massive upset.
