In combat sports, it is not uncommon for fighters to enter the octagon without being at full capacity. Injuries, training setbacks, or personal circumstances can prevent athletes from performing at their best, which can significantly impact the outcome of a fight. Former champion Alex Pereira recently addressed his performance against Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313, which made him lose the title.

Preparation for the rematch has been intensive on both sides. Pereira has focused on strengthening his striking, grappling, and overall conditioning, while Ankalaev has maintained a rigorous training schedule to refine his defensive and offensive techniques. Both fighters are aiming to be at their optimal physical and strategic condition for the bout at UFC 320 on October 4, 2025.

However, the ‘Poatan’ that the world saw against Ankalaev at UFC 313 was significantly different from what was seen before. Known for knocking out opponents such as Jamahal Hill, Jiri Prochazka, and Khalil Rountree Jr, Pereira has made his name as one of the most dangerous fighters to get in the cage with. He recently spoke about what was different at UFC 313 in an interview on the Brian Campbell Experience.

I was about 40% on that night, and obviously it’s gonna be much more this time. But if I’m only 50%, that 10% is gonna make such a great difference, they’re gonna leave no doubt for everybody.

While Pereira’s confidence in his ability to improve is impressive, the Brazilian superstar has not shown much of his game plan for the rematch. Many have speculated that Pereira will train for high pedigree wrestling; however, Ankalaev has promised not to use his grappling prowess and wants to keep the fight on the feet. Their first fight did not see much grappling from the Russian phenom either.

There has also been a good amount of trash talk between the two opponents as Ankalaev was constantly taking shots at Pereira. ‘Big Ank’ has also promised to hand Pereira his fourth knockout career loss and has vowed to send him back to his roots. While ‘Poatan’ has remained awfully quiet and inactive, he has given a few sneak peeks into his camp.

Overall, this rematch between Pereira and Ankalaev represents a pivotal moment for both fighters. With enhanced preparation, strategy adjustments, and the stakes of redemption or confirmation of dominance, the fight is set to be a key event. The added trash talk and back and forth is adding an extra layer to their rivalry.

Magomed Ankalaev does not respect Alex Pereira anymore

Rivalries and changes in respect between fighters are common in mixed martial arts, reflecting the competitive nature of the sport. Magomed Ankalaev has notably shifted his perspective regarding Alex Pereira since their last fight.

Ankalaev spoke about how Pereira lied about their potential encounter at the UFC Performance Institute. This reassessment also appears to be tied to Pereira’s communication and behavior, which Ankalaev found unsatisfactory or lacking during their exchanges. Such changes can affect the mental and strategic approach fighters take toward one another in future contests.

Up until recently, I had respect for him as a fighter, as a person, but I no longer respect him. When you lie to people and say something that he was hiding in the (UFC PI) and all that stuff, he recently said. Why would you lie about something that never really happened?
